Triumph of Righteousness: Celebrating Dussehra Vijayadashmi 2025

Mark your calendars! Vijayadashami, is set to light up the nation on Thursday, October 2, 2025. This auspicious Hindu festival is the spectacular finale to the nine-day Navratri celebration, universally symbolizing the timeless victory of good over evil.

Why Vijayadashami Matters

The festival's profound significance is rooted in two epic triumphs from Hindu mythology. Firstly, it marks the day Lord Rama defeated the ten-headed demon king Ravana after a fierce battle to rescue his wife, Sita. The word 'Dussehra' itself is believed to derive from Dasha Hara, meaning "remover of ten," representing the vanquishing of Ravana's ten evil heads, which symbolize inner demons like lust, anger, and ego.

Secondly, Vijayadashami celebrates Goddess Durga's glorious victory over the malevolent buffalo demon, Mahishasura, restoring cosmic order. Across the nation, this dual victory reinforces a core spiritual message: that righteousness (dharma) will always prevail.

Celebrations: From Ramlila to Ravana Dahan

The air in India buzzes with celebratory energy. In the North, the grand, theatrical performances of Ramlila culminate on Dussehra evening with the thrilling Ravana Dahan the ceremonial burning of giant effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhakarna, and son Meghnad. This spectacle, often accompanied by dazzling fireworks, is a powerful visual reminder to conquer one's own vices.

Meanwhile, in Eastern states, the day is known as Bijoya Dashomi and involves the emotional immersion (Visarjan) of Goddess Durga's idols, marking her return home. In South and West India, the day is dedicated to Ayudha Puja, where tools, vehicles, and books are ritually worshipped, honoring one's livelihood and the instruments of knowledge.

Looking to celebrate this powerful day? The most auspicious Vijay Muhurat for performing rituals in 2025 will be from approximately 2:09 PM to 2:56 PM on October 2nd. As you celebrate the destruction of evil this Dusshera- Vijayadashmi, what internal "Ravana"—be it procrastination or pride—are you planning to conquer?
