Navi Mumbai Airport Inaugurated,PM Modi Targets Infrastructure Leap, Global Connectivity

India’s ambition for world-class infrastructure received a boost as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase 1 of the Rs.19,650 crore Navi Mumbai International Airport on 7 October 2025.

Set across 1,160 hectares, the airport will handle an estimated 90 million passengers and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo annually, joining Mumbai to the ranks of international cities with multiple large airports such as London and New York. Its lotus-shaped architecture pays tribute to India’s heritage, while features such as automated people movers, solar power, electric vehicle buses, and water taxi links mark technological advancements.

The Prime Minister, in his speech, cited the project as a symbol of ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India), celebrating the country’s leap in aviation  from 74 airports in 2014 to over 160 in 2025 and India’s rise as the world’s third-largest domestic aviation market. He emphasized the airport’s role in economic revival, facilitating exports for farmers and fishermen, and creating new jobs. Modi also inaugurated Phase 3 of the Mumbai Metro and launched the “Mumbai One” integrated mobility app, highlighting government efforts for affordable, accessible, and sustainable urban transit.

With commercial operations set to begin in December 2025, the airport’s launch marks a transformative step for logistics, tourism, and regional connectivity, reinforcing India’s infrastructure resilience in the midst of ongoing national crises.
