Top News Headlines September 10, 2026: From the Supreme Court's intervention in the CBSE three-language policy and the latest developments ahead of the BRICS Summit to the rupee's fall, crude oil crossing $100 a barrel, Apple's first foldable iPhone and major sports and entertainment updates, Thursday brought developments across almost every major sector.
Here are the top news stories of September 10, 2026, across India, world affairs, business, education, technology, sports and entertainment.
1. Supreme Court Asks CBSE to Consider Relief for Current Class 6 Students
The Supreme Court has asked the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to consider giving the current Class 6 batch a reprieve from the three-language policy.
A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to examine whether the students could be given accommodation during the ongoing academic session. The wider challenge to the policy has been listed for September 17.
The Court had previously expressed concern about the manner of implementation and the availability of teachers and other infrastructure needed for multiple language choices.
2. Supreme Court Rejects Abu Salem's Plea for Early Release
In another important judgment, the Supreme Court dismissed gangster Abu Salem's plea seeking premature releasefrom life imprisonment in connection with the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.
The bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta found no reason to interfere with the Bombay High Court's April 2026 decision rejecting his plea. Salem had argued that he had completed the 25-year period referred to in India's extradition assurances to Portugal.
The Court had earlier held that the government was required to consider the sovereign assurance given to Portugal, but that did not mean Salem was entitled to an automatic release order from the Court.
3. SC Raises Concern Over Threats to Minor NEET Protester
The Supreme Court also expressed serious concern over alleged harassment and intimidation of a minor girl who participated in the Cockroach Janta Party protests at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.
The issue was raised during the hearing of petitions concerning the protests over an alleged NEET question-paper leak. The bench indicated that the minor's family should receive necessary protection amid allegations that a person had publicly claimed responsibility for intimidating her.
The development has added another legal dimension to the continuing controversy surrounding the protests.
4. Satya Niketan Collapse: MCD Demolishes 58 Structures
The Delhi civic authorities have intensified action against unsafe and unauthorised buildings following the deadly Satya Niketan building collapse.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has so far demolished 58 structures and issued orders for action against another 31. The enforcement drive includes demolitions, sealing of properties and notices against constructions considered unsafe or unauthorised.
The Supreme Court, meanwhile, has asked the Delhi High Court to continue monitoring the collapse-related proceedings, observing that matters had begun moving forward.
5. Raghav Chadha's Name Added to Delhi Electoral Roll
A political controversy has intensified around BJP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha's inclusion in the Delhi electoral roll.
The Delhi Chief Electoral Officer's office said Chadha's Form 6 application was processed through the regular procedure and approved on September 2. AAP has questioned the manner and timing of the inclusion, while Chadha has maintained that the prescribed Election Commission process was followed.
The dispute comes amid the ongoing revision of electoral rolls in Delhi.
6. BRICS Summit: Modi, Xi and Putin Set to Meet in New Delhi
India is preparing to host the BRICS Leaders' Summit on September 12 and 13 in New Delhi.
The summit comes against the backdrop of the continuing US-Iran conflict, which has created tensions within the expanded BRICS grouping. Iran and the UAE, both members of the bloc, have found themselves on opposing sides of the regional conflict.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian are among the leaders expected to attend. Possible bilateral discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi, as well as Modi and Putin, are attracting particular attention.
The Middle East crisis and the economic consequences of high oil prices could make the summit particularly significant.
7. Crude Oil Stays Above $100 as Middle East Conflict Intensifies
Global energy markets remain under pressure as Brent crude stays above $100 per barrel.
Brent was around $102.15 a barrel during Thursday trading, while US West Texas Intermediate crude climbed towards $97.50. Prices have risen sharply as attacks on shipping and uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz raise concerns about global supply disruptions.
For India, which imports a large share of its crude oil requirements, prolonged high oil prices could put pressure on inflation, the current account and the rupee.
8. Rupee Falls to ₹95.44 Against US Dollar
The Indian rupee weakened for a third consecutive trading session, closing at ₹95.44 per US dollar.
Reuters reported that the decline was driven by higher crude prices, increased dollar demand and corporate hedging activity. The Reserve Bank of India has also been using foreign-exchange operations to manage liquidity and provide some support to the currency.
The currency's weakness is being closely watched because sustained oil-price increases can increase India's import bill.
9. Indian Stock Market Ends Higher After Volatile Session
Indian equities managed to close higher despite pressure from rising crude prices and geopolitical uncertainty.
The Nifty 50 gained around 0.2% while the Sensex rose about 0.19%. However, trading remained volatile, with the market reacting to oil prices, Middle East developments and derivatives expiry.
Investors are also watching upcoming US inflation data and its possible impact on Federal Reserve policy.
10. Apple Launches First Foldable iPhone Duo
Technology was dominated by Apple's September 9 product launch, with the company unveiling its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo.
The device has a foldable 7.6-inch internal display and a 5.4-inch outer screen. It starts at $1,999 globally, while the Indian price begins at around ₹2,99,900.
Apple also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12, Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5.
11. iPhone Prices Rise Sharply in India
Apple's new launch also brought an unusual price shock for Indian consumers.
Reuters reported that India saw some of the steepest iPhone price increases among major markets, with prices rising by as much as 41% for certain models. The company has pointed to higher memory and storage component costs, while India's import duties and GST also affect retail prices.
The development could make Apple's premium products even more expensive for Indian buyers.
12. Harshit Rana Ruled Out, Bumrah Declared Fit
Indian cricket received a mixed fitness update ahead of the Afghanistan T20I series and Asian Games.
Fast bowler Harshit Rana has been ruled out of India's upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan and the Asian Games after suffering another hamstring injury during fitness testing.
Yash Thakur has been named as his replacement. At the same time, Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy have cleared their fitness tests and are available for selection.
India's three-match T20I series against Afghanistan begins on September 13 in Delhi.
13. US Open: Coco Gauff Reaches Women's Singles Semifinal
At the US Open, Coco Gauff staged a major comeback against Mirra Andreeva, winning 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-2 after saving two match points.
Gauff will face Elena Rybakina in the semifinal. Rybakina also advanced after defeating Zheng Qinwen and will enter the last four as the tournament's incoming world No. 1.
The women's semifinals are among the major sporting events on Thursday's schedule in New York.
14. Hanuman Ansh Crosses ₹150 Crore India Net
The low-budget Hindi film Hanuman Ansh continues its remarkable theatrical run.
The film added an estimated ₹10.25 crore on Day 34, taking its India net collection to around ₹153.13 crore, according to trade estimates reported by entertainment publications.
The film, released on August 7, has become one of the surprise commercial performers of the year, particularly given its reported modest production budget.
15. Mirzapur The Movie Continues Strong Box Office Run
Mirzapur The Movie remains one of the biggest theatrical talking points in Indian entertainment.
The film has maintained strong audience interest during its first week, with trade reports placing its India net collection at around ₹139 crore by Day 7 and its worldwide gross at nearly ₹193.5 crore by Day 6.
The film's performance has also created significant competition for Yash's Toxic, which has slowed considerably in its third week.
16. Toxic Faces Tough Competition at Box Office
Yash-starrer Toxic is experiencing a contrasting theatrical trajectory.
Trade estimates put its worldwide gross at around ₹339.32 crore by Day 15, while its India net collection remained below ₹250 crore. The film has faced stronger competition from Mirzapur The Movie and Hanuman Ansh.
As always with box-office figures, these numbers are trade estimates rather than audited financial statements.
17. Ukraine War: Zelenskyy Seeks More Support From Canada
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in Canada seeking additional military and air-defence support as the war with Russia continues.
Ukraine is seeking stronger assistance ahead of winter, particularly for air defence and energy infrastructure. At the same time, Ukraine has expanded long-range strikes against Russian infrastructure, while Russia continues extensive drone attacks on Ukrainian territory.
NATO officials are also warning Europe to strengthen its own defence capabilities in response to Russia's continuing actions.
18. US-Iran Conflict Continues to Drive Global Uncertainty
The continuing US-Iran conflict remains the biggest geopolitical story affecting global markets.
Attacks on shipping and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz have contributed to the rise in crude prices. The conflict is also creating political and diplomatic complications for countries participating in BRICS, particularly because Iran and the UAE are both members of the expanded grouping.
The longer the conflict continues, the greater the potential impact on energy prices, inflation, trade and global financial markets.
19. Global Markets Remain Focused on Inflation
The oil shock is also complicating the outlook for central banks.
European and Asian markets have been cautious as investors assess the possibility that higher energy prices could keep inflation elevated. Markets are watching the European Central Bank's policy decision as well as upcoming US inflation data for clues about the Federal Reserve's next move.
For India, the combination of expensive crude and a weaker rupee remains particularly important because it can increase the domestic cost of imported energy.
20. The Big Picture: Oil, BRICS and India's Economic Balancing Act
Three stories connect many of today's headlines: the Middle East conflict, India's upcoming BRICS summit and pressure on financial markets.
India enters the BRICS meeting as the host while simultaneously dealing with the economic consequences of an oil shock. The rupee has weakened, crude has crossed $100 and investors are becoming increasingly sensitive to geopolitical developments.
At the domestic level, the Supreme Court's interventions on education and other legal matters, civic action following the Satya Niketan collapse and continuing political disputes over electoral rolls are also shaping the day's news cycle.
