BCCI Denies Rohit Sharma Retirement Rumours Ahead of Lord's ODI Decider

Speculation that Rohit Sharma was about to walk away from international cricket reached fever pitch this week — and the BCCI has now stepped in to shut it down, at least officially.

Ahead of the series-deciding third ODI against England at Lord's on Sunday, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia firmly dismissed reports suggesting the match would be Sharma's farewell appearance in Indian colours. Speaking to PTI, Saikia said there had been no discussion within the board about Sharma playing his last match at Lord's, and reiterated that the veteran batter remains a regular member of India's ODI setup, adding that he would continue representing the country as long as he remained part of the team's plans.

The denial comes against a backdrop of persistent reporting pointing the other way. Multiple outlets have cited sources suggesting the national selectors have already shifted their long-term focus toward the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, with young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal being lined up for an extended run in the side. According to some reports, selectors are said to have communicated to Sharma that he isn't part of their plans beyond the current England tour, even as the 39-year-old has reportedly expressed his own desire to continue and invested heavily in his fitness — with the final call on his future left to him. Reports also suggested that discussions about his ODI future had begun as early as this year's IPL, in conversations between chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Sharma's recent form has done little to quiet the speculation. He managed just 11 off 21 balls in the series opener at Edgbaston, before a slow 26 off 47 at Cardiff, surviving a couple of half-chances along the way. Team management has publicly backed him regardless — batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said ahead of the Lord's match that he expected a "completely different" innings from the veteran, and reports of his parents having arrived in London ahead of the match only added further fuel to farewell speculation, whether or not that reading was accurate.

Sharma's ODI captaincy was already handed over to Shubman Gill last year, a move widely read at the time as the start of a generational transition. He retired from Test cricket in 2025 and from T20Is even earlier, meaning ODIs remain his only format of active international cricket regardless of how Sunday's match unfolds.

For now, the BCCI's position is unambiguous even if the underlying selection conversation remains murky: officially, Lord's is just another ODI for Rohit Sharma — not a farewell.
