Jasprit Bumrah marked his return to One-Day International cricket in memorable fashion by rewriting the record books during India's opening ODI against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
The pace spearhead became the Indian bowler with the most ODI wickets in England after dismissing England captain Harry Brook, surpassing Ravindra Jadeja's long-standing tally. The breakthrough was also a personal milestone as Bumrah completed 150 wickets in ODI cricket, achieving the landmark after making his first appearance in the format in nearly three years.
Bumrah reached the record in the 14th over of England's innings when Brook edged a well-disguised slower delivery to first slip, where Rohit Sharma completed a comfortable catch. The wicket took Bumrah's tally in England to 31 ODI scalps, moving him ahead of Jadeja (30), while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Madan Lal and Mohammed Shami follow further down the list.
The achievement came in what was Bumrah's first ODI since 2023. Despite spending 968 days away from the 50-over format, the right-arm fast bowler looked immediately at home with the new ball, providing India with an early breakthrough and reminding why he remains one of the world's premier white-ball bowlers.
England had made a positive start after winning the toss, but Bumrah's disciplined spell helped India claw its way back into the contest. Although Joe Root and Liam Dawson later steadied the innings with important contributions, England were eventually bowled out for 258 in 47.5 overs.
India responded confidently in the chase, with captain Shubman Gill leading from the front before Axar Patel and Washington Sundar guided the visitors home. The six-wicket victory not only handed India a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series but also ended a disappointing run on the tour after setbacks in the T20I leg. It was England's first ODI defeat at Edgbaston in 12 years.
Bumrah's latest milestone adds another chapter to an already distinguished international career. Since making his ODI debut in 2016, he has developed into India's strike bowler across formats, earning a reputation for delivering in pressure situations with his unique action, pinpoint yorkers and ability to control the death overs.
His return also strengthens India's bowling attack ahead of the remaining matches of the England series and the international calendar that follows. With senior players including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul back in the ODI setup, India appears to have regained balance after a difficult period in T20 cricket.
The match also attracted attention away from the field as former India captain MS Dhoni was spotted in the stands at Edgbaston. A heartwarming interaction between Dhoni and a young fan quickly went viral on social media, adding another memorable moment to the day.
For Bumrah, however, the day belonged to his own achievement. Returning after a lengthy absence from ODI cricket, he not only celebrated a personal milestone of 150 wickets but also became India's most successful ODI bowler on English soil—a record that underlines his consistency in overseas conditions and reinforces his status as one of the country's finest fast bowlers of the modern era.
