Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Likely to Feature in Vijay Hazare Trophy Ahead of New Zealand ODI Series

India’s senior batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are expected to take part in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy before the ODI series against New Zealand in January 2026. Both players could appear in at least three matches for their domestic sides—Mumbai for Rohit and Delhi for Kohli—as part of preparations for the international season. The BCCI and team management aim to keep centrally contracted players match-fit and in rhythm ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Domestic Window Between International Series
The five-week gap between India’s last ODI against South Africa on December 6 in Visakhapatnam and the first ODI against New Zealand on January 11 in Vadodara offers an ideal window for domestic participation. Mumbai’s Vijay Hazare fixtures are scheduled for December 24, 26, 29, 31, and January 3, 6, and 8. Rohit is expected to play at least three of these games, with Kohli following a similar schedule for Delhi.

A BCCI source told PTI that the objective is to help both players regain competitive rhythm. “Rohit will be expected to play at least three rounds before linking up with the squad. Ditto for Virat,” the source said.

Selectors Emphasize Domestic Participation
Under chief selector Ajit Agarkar, the BCCI has stressed that fit and available centrally contracted players should participate in domestic tournaments. This policy ensures accountability, keeps players connected to domestic cricket, and allows selectors to assess form before major assignments.

The emphasis on the Vijay Hazare Trophy also addresses the limited 50-over cricket in the current cycle. Participation is seen as crucial for maintaining ODI readiness with an eye on the 2027 World Cup.

Preparation for World Cup 2027
For Rohit and Virat, both in their mid-30s, these appearances are an important step in sustaining form and match fitness ahead of the World Cup. While both players have indicated their intention to continue their ODI careers, consistent performances will be key.

Historically, Kohli last played in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2010, leading Delhi but scoring only 16 runs. Rohit played for Mumbai in 2018 under Shreyas Iyer against Ambati Rayudu’s Hyderabad, scoring 17 runs. Both teams won their respective matches.
