Tanzid Hasan’s maiden Test century against Australia made him the first Bangladesh batter to score a Test hundred on Australian soil.

Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan produced a landmark innings in Darwin on Friday, scoring his maiden Test century against Australia. His 101 off 197 balls helped Bangladesh take firm control of the opening Test and also created a new record for Bangladesh cricket.

Hasan became the first Bangladeshi batter to score a Test century in Australia. He reached his hundred from 188 balls before Nathan Lyon dismissed him soon afterwards.

Ponting Praises His Technique

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting singled out Hasan’s temperament and defensive technique while commentating on Channel 7.

Ponting said Hasan had adapted well despite growing up playing on the slower and lower pitches of Bangladesh. He praised the opener’s patience and his ability to defend good deliveries while putting away loose balls.

“He’s been very impressive,” Ponting said, highlighting the simplicity of Hasan’s technique and his discipline at the crease.

A Patient Knock

Hasan’s innings stood out for its composure in conditions unfamiliar to him. He avoided unnecessary risks and built his score by rotating the strike and capitalising on scoring opportunities.

His effort proved particularly valuable after Australia managed only 198 in their first innings. Bangladesh responded strongly and maintained pressure throughout the second day.

Australia Misses Chances

Hasan also benefited from two important fielding lapses during his innings. Nathan Lyon dropped him off his own bowling on the opening day before the batter had opened his account.

Australia missed another opportunity on Friday when Steve Smith could not complete a catch off Lyon with Hasan on 62.

The reprieves eventually proved costly as Hasan went on to reach three figures.

Lyon Ends His Innings

Hasan’s stay at the crease ended shortly after he completed his century. He attempted an attacking stroke against Lyon but picked out Mitchell Starc at long-off.

Former Australia batter Greg Blewett praised the Bangladesh opener despite the dismissal. He said the wicket did not diminish the quality of Hasan’s innings and acknowledged the significance of his century.

Bangladesh Take Control

Bangladesh finished the second day at 351 for six, giving them a 153-run first-innings lead over Australia. The visitors also had four wickets remaining when play ended.

Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed 84, while Mominul Haque made 49 as Bangladesh built a commanding position after Australia’s early collapse.

The hosts had won the toss and elected to bat but were bowled out for 198 in 53 overs. Bangladesh’s disciplined batting then shifted the momentum firmly towards the visitors.

Landmark Career Moment

The century marked a major milestone in Hasan’s young Test career. He made his Test debut earlier this year against Pakistan and entered the Darwin match with only one Test appearance.

His performance also ended Bangladesh’s wait for an away Test century since Mahmudul Hasan Joy scored 137 against South Africa in Durban in 2022, according to reports.

Bangladesh will now look to convert their advantage into a decisive position when play resumes, while Australia face the task of breaking through the remaining batting resistance. For Hasan, the historic Tanzid Hasan century has already become one of the defining moments of Bangladesh’s tour of Australia.
