Tim David Hamstring Injury Casts Shadow Over Australia's T20 World Cup Build-Up

Australia's preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup suffered a setback when powerhouse batter Tim David sustained a hamstring injury during Hobart Hurricanes' four-wicket Big Bash League victory over Perth Scorchers on Friday night.
David, batting fluently on 42 off 28 balls, pulled up while running a single in the 15th over at Optus Stadium. He received treatment but retired hurt, leaving the chase at 103 for 4. The Hurricanes still reached 151 with three balls to spare, improving to 3-1 and joint-top of the table.
The 29-year-old faces scans today to assess the damage. This marks his second hamstring issue this year, having missed two months earlier during the IPL with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Teammate and Hurricanes captain Nathan Ellis called it "shattering," hoping proper management allows a swift return for both the BBL title defence and the World Cup.
The ICC Men's T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, begins February 7. Australia, in Group B with Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Oman, open against Ireland on February 11 in Colombo.
David has been a key middle-order finisher for Australia, featuring in the 2022 and 2024 editions. His explosive form—including a recent 74 against India—underlines his value, with 1,231 T20I runs at a 172.89 strike rate.
Selectors are expected to name the squad next month and likely include David, banking on recovery. A prolonged absence, however, would dent Australia's batting depth as they chase a second title.
