Digital desk
Chhattisgarh weather update for August 26: Heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning are likely as a low-pressure area over Jharkhand remains active.
Chhattisgarh is likely to witness another spell of rain on Wednesday, August 26, with the weather department warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning in some parts of the state. The ongoing weather activity is linked to a low-pressure area over Jharkhand and adjoining regions, which continues to influence conditions across Chhattisgarh.
Rainfall is expected to continue over the next 24 hours, although the intensity of the monsoon is likely to decrease thereafter. Most places may receive light to moderate showers, while isolated areas could experience heavier rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning.
Low-Pressure Area Drives Rain
According to the weather department, the low-pressure area over Jharkhand and adjoining areas remains active. An associated cyclonic circulation is contributing to increased rainfall activity over Chhattisgarh.
The system is expected to move west-northwestwards during the next 24 hours. Its movement is likely to influence rainfall over several parts of the state before weather activity gradually weakens.
Heavy Rain in Several Areas
During the past 24 hours, several areas of the Bastar, Raipur, Bilaspur and Surguja divisions received rainfall. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall was reported at some locations.
Bade Bacheli recorded the highest rainfall, receiving around 170 mm during the period. The spell has also resulted in waterlogging in some low-lying and urban areas following intense showers.
Lightning Risk Remains
The weather department has cautioned that some areas could experience thunderstorms and lightning along with heavy rain. People are advised to exercise caution during thunderstorms and avoid open areas, isolated trees and other exposed locations when lightning activity is observed.
The possibility of intense showers may also affect local traffic and visibility in affected areas.
Rain Forecast for Raipur
In Raipur, thunderstorms accompanied by rain or showers are likely on August 26. The maximum temperature is expected to remain around 30 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may settle near 24 degrees Celsius.
Residents can expect generally cloudy conditions with intermittent showers during the day.
Rainfall 2% Below Normal
Despite the recent spells of rain, Chhattisgarh's cumulative monsoon rainfall remains slightly below the seasonal normal. According to the weather department, the state has recorded 2% less rainfall than normal so far this monsoon season.
The overall rainfall situation, however, remains close to normal. The next two days could bring light to moderate rain at many places, with isolated areas continuing to face the possibility of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
Rain May Ease After 24 Hours
The current weather system is expected to keep rainfall activity active across Chhattisgarh through the next 24 hours. After that, a gradual reduction in rainfall activity is likely.
Residents in areas under the possibility of heavy rain and lightning should follow local weather advisories and take necessary precautions, particularly during thunderstorms.
