15 km Automatic Signalling Commissioned on Nipaniya–Bhatapara Section; Train Speed, Safety and Line Capacity to Rise

The Raipur Division of South East Central Railway (SECR) has successfully commissioned a new 15-km automatic signalling system on the Nipaniya–Bhatapara triple-line section, marking a major upgrade aimed at improving speed, safety, and overall line capacity. The enhancement is expected to significantly increase the pace of freight movement through the corridor.

Officials said automatic signalling will allow trains to operate with shorter intervals, reducing headway and boosting the section’s throughput. The work was carried out by taking short disconnection blocks on individual lines to ensure minimal disruption to passenger services.

Key Upgrades Implemented

1. Signalling Modernisation

  • Installation of 28 automatic signals across the 15-km stretch

  • 12 semi-automatic signals added

2. Advanced Detection Technology

  • Deployment of 146 Detection Points

  • Installation of MSDAC (Multi-Section Digital Axle Counter) units from CG Tronics

  • Use of dual detection and media diversity for high reliability

  • Accurate location tracking even in adverse conditions

3. Enhanced Level-Crossing Safety

  • LC-379 and LC-380 fully interlocked with the signalling network

  • Three new Auto Huts constructed

4. Real-Time Fault Monitoring

  • Integrated Power Supply (IPS) units from Statcon

  • Data loggers from Aftonics for live fault detection

  • Ensures uninterrupted operations and faster rectification

5. Special Facility for Mid-Line Operations

  • Dedicated direction-setting panel commissioned

  • Enables flexible train routing in both directions

How Dual Detection Improves Safety

Dual detection ensures train position accuracy even during failures. The first channel counts axles, while the second independently verifies the reading—eliminating the possibility of error.

Benefits for Passengers and Freight Services

  • Smoother and more punctual train operations

  • Sharp reduction in signalling failures

  • Faster and safer freight movement

  • Increased capacity to handle rising traffic demand

Project Completed Between 6–7 December

With the successful commissioning of Nipaniya yard, the project was completed between December 6 and 7, 2025. Railway officials said the upgrade is a major step forward in the ongoing modernisation of SECR’s Raipur Division.
