Indore Airport reports recovery of over 5,700 lost items in three years as nearly 15 passengers forget belongings daily.
The Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar (DABH) Airport in Indore is witnessing a peculiar trend where nearly 15 passengers daily leave behind their personal belongings, ranging from high-end gadgets to crucial travel documents. Recent data reveals that the airport's Lost and Found department has successfully processed and returned approximately 5,700 items to their rightful owners over the last three years, highlighting a consistent lapse in passenger oversight during transit.
Surge in forgotten items
Airport records indicate a significant volume of misplaced property, with an average of 440 passengers forgetting items every month. In January alone, officials recovered 497 items, while February saw 405 reports of lost belongings. These items, which include laptops, smartphones, chargers, and luxury watches, are immediately deposited with the terminal manager for safekeeping and documentation.
Recovery and claim trends
Despite the high recovery rate by security personnel, only about 25% of passengers eventually come forward to claim their property. Over the last two months, 209 travellers successfully retrieved their belongings after verification. Authorities noted that while 5,700 items were returned in three years, a vast quantity of lower-value items often goes unclaimed as passengers prioritize their onward journey.
Delayed realization by flyers
Sources indicated that most passengers only realize they are missing items after reaching their final destination. In a recent instance, a traveller arriving from Mumbai discovered his bag was missing only after reaching his residence; the bag was later traced and returned by airport staff. Similarly, a parcel from a Sharjah flight remains unclaimed despite being recovered in late February.
Advisory committee reviews data
The scale of misplaced luggage was recently tabled during an Airport Advisory Committee meeting. Committee Chairman and Member of Parliament, Shankar Lalwani, was briefed on the efficiency of the retrieval process. Officials emphasized that the airport maintains a streamlined system to ensure that any verified claim is processed promptly to minimize inconvenience to the public.
Mandatory documentation for claims
To maintain security and ensure "Latest News Today" standards of transparency, the airport follows a strict verification protocol for returning items. Claimants must provide a boarding pass confirming the travel date along with a valid government-issued photo ID. If a representative is sent, an authorization letter addressed to the Airport Director is mandatory to prevent any wrongful handover of property.
Policy on unclaimed property
As per the current "Government Updates" regarding airport management, items are not held indefinitely. If a recovered object remains unclaimed for a period of three months, it is moved out of the terminal storage. Following this window, the property is forwarded for further administrative action or disposal as per the established civil aviation regulations in India.
Heightened vigil for gadgets
With Indore being a growing tech and education hub, the frequency of "Trending News India" regarding lost electronics has spiked. The airport administration has urged travellers to double-check security bins and seating areas. This "Public Interest Story" serves as a reminder for passengers to remain vigilant to ensure a seamless "India News Update" experience while navigating one of Central India’s busiest terminals.
