Commuters in Bhopal will now enjoy faster and more frequent Metro services as the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) begins operating trains on both tracks of the Subhash Nagar–AIIMS priority corridor from Saturday, July 25. The upgraded operations will increase the total number of daily trips to 50, significantly reducing passenger waiting time.

The move comes nearly seven months after the commercial launch of the Bhopal Metro on December 20, 2025, when Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav inaugurated the service. Until now, Metro trains had been running only on a single track, resulting in longer intervals between services.

Peak-Hour Frequency Reduced to 15 Minutes

Under the revised timetable, the first Metro train from Subhash Nagar Station to AIIMS Station will depart at 9:00 a.m.

Passengers will now receive:

• Metro every 15 minutes during peak hours
• Metro every 30 minutes during non-peak hours

Previously, the gap between trains was approximately 75 minutes, making regular commuting less convenient. The new schedule is expected to provide a major boost to daily commuters, office-goers, students, and hospital visitors.

Signalling System Enables Dual-Track Operations

According to MPMRCL, the improved operations have been made possible after completing the first phase of the advanced signalling system, often described as the backbone of any Metro network.

The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) inspected the signalling infrastructure during a two-day visit to Bhopal in June. Following safety clearance, Metro authorities finalized plans to introduce the upgraded operating system from July 25.

The signalling technology allows:

• Simultaneous operation on both tracks
• Reduced time gap between trains
• Automatic train movement management
• Speed regulation and safe train separation
• Better emergency response and operational efficiency

Officials said the technology is similar to the modern signalling system used by the Delhi Metro, enabling higher service frequency and improved passenger safety.

Discounts and Digital Benefits for Commuters

To encourage Metro usage, MPMRCL has also introduced promotional fare benefits for passengers.

The new offers include:

• 5% discount on return journey tickets.
• 10% discount on group bookings.

Passengers using the MPMRCL mobile app can also receive bonus value on e-wallet recharges:

• Recharge of ₹200–₹499: 8% bonus
• Recharge of ₹500–₹999: 10% bonus
• Recharge of ₹1,000–₹1,499: 12% bonus
• Recharge of ₹1,500–₹2,000: 15% bonus

The corporation says the initiative aims to promote cashless payments, digital ticketing, and a smoother travel experience while helping commuters save on travel costs.

Stations to Open Before First Train

Metro stations will open 15 minutes before the departure of the first scheduled train, allowing passengers sufficient time for security screening, ticket purchase, and boarding.

Manual ticket counters will be available at designated entry and exit gates across all stations on the corridor, including:

• Subhash Nagar
• Kendriya Vidyalaya
• Board Office
• MP Nagar
• Rani Kamalapati
• DRM Office
• Alkapuri
• AIIMS

This arrangement is expected to reduce congestion and improve passenger movement during busy hours.

₹800-Crore Signalling Project

The newly commissioned signalling system is part of a larger project valued at approximately ₹800 crore, covering nearly 30 kilometres of the Metro network. The Subhash Nagar–AIIMS priority corridor is the first section where the advanced system has been implemented.

Metro officials believe the upgrade marks a major step toward expanding operations and maximizing the corridor's capacity. As additional sections of the Metro become operational, the same technology will support higher train frequency and seamless services across the network.
