MP Alok Sharma Files Complaint Against IAS Santosh Verma; Brahmin Leaders Seek Strict Action in Bhopal

A political and social controversy has escalated in Madhya Pradesh over alleged derogatory remarks by IAS officer Santosh Verma about Brahmin daughters, prompting intervention from both political and community leaders.

Bhopal MP Alok Sharma met Union Minister of State for Personnel Dr. Jitendra Singh in Delhi and submitted a written complaint urging strict disciplinary action under the IAS (Conduct) Rules, 1968. Sharma described Verma’s comments, made from a public platform, as unconstitutional, socially divisive, and violative of civil service ethics. He demanded that the Centre take cognizance and initiate appropriate action if Verma is found guilty.

Earlier, leaders of the Brahmin community, accompanied by BJP and Congress MLAs, met Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav at his residence in Bhopal. The delegation submitted a memorandum stating that Verma’s statements had triggered widespread protests across Madhya Pradesh and other states. The CM assured the delegation that action would be taken promptly.

This is not the first time Verma has faced scrutiny. Rewa MP Janardan Mishra had earlier questioned his selection under the Scheduled Tribe category, claiming it violated reservation norms. In 2021, a court ruled his selection invalid, and past cases also allege contempt of court, use of inappropriate language, and obstruction of government work.

Brahmin leaders, including Pushpendra Mishra, former minister PC Sharma, and deputy leader of opposition Hemant Katare, emphasized that Verma’s statement violated constitutional principles of equality and threatened social harmony, particularly at a time when the central government promotes welfare and community unity.

The memorandum requested disciplinary action, investigation into his alleged wrongful selection, and a review of his promotions in light of prior court orders. Verma’s remarks, claiming Brahmin daughters should be “given in donation” or develop “relations” to end reservations, sparked demonstrations and effigy burnings nationwide.

Both the political and community pressure signal that authorities may take swift action, as the case continues to draw public attention and intensify calls for accountability.
