The Madhya Pradesh Urban Development Company (MPUDC) has been entrusted with an expanded mandate to implement the Namami Narmade programme and develop projects in electric mobility, information technology and public-private partnerships, following a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav on Tuesday.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the MPUDC Board of Directors, marking a significant shift in the company’s role, which until now has been largely limited to water supply and sewerage projects. Under the revised framework, MPUDC will also lead initiatives focused on environmental conservation and urban infrastructure along the Narmada river.
According to officials, a new independent section will be created within MPUDC to plan and execute projects related to solid and liquid waste management, environmental improvement, and reuse of treated water along the river banks. The Namami Narmade initiative will be developed on the lines of the Centre’s Namami Gange mission, with an emphasis on river rejuvenation and sustainable urban practices.
In addition to river-centric projects, new sections will be formed for EV-based urban mobility, IT-enabled civic services and PPP-driven infrastructure development. Subject-matter experts will be appointed to head these verticals, ensuring technical oversight and timely execution.
Chairing the meeting, Chief Minister Yadav said the restructuring aims to attract greater investment, strengthen urban infrastructure and introduce modern transport solutions in cities across the state. He emphasised that integrated planning and professional expertise would be key to achieving long-term urban development goals.
Senior officials present at the meeting included Additional Chief Secretary Dr Rajesh Rajoura, Deepali Rastogi, Principal Secretary Sukhbir Singh, P. Narhari, and Commissioner of Urban Administration and Housing Sanket Bhondwe. Officials said the new departments will function with financial discipline and work in coordination with NITI Aayog and other state and central agencies to accelerate metropolitan area development.
Additional Chief Secretary (Urban Administration) Sanjay Dubey said the company’s organisational structure will be reworked to align with current and emerging needs. “Posts have been sanctioned as per requirement. Experts will be identified and placed in these new sections to focus on urban transport, IT-enabled facilities and innovative approaches to urban development,” he said.
The expansion of MPUDC’s mandate signals the state government’s push towards integrated urban planning, sustainable river management and future-ready infrastructure. Officials indicated that detailed guidelines and project timelines will be finalised in the coming weeks, with implementation expected to begin in a phased manner.
