Nine Bodies Recovered as Cruise Sinks in Bargi Dam; Four Still Missing

Sudden storm capsizes tourist vessel in Jabalpur; pilot, two staff dismissed over negligence

A tourist cruise carrying holidaymakers capsized in Bargi Dam near Jabalpur on Thursday evening, leaving nine dead and four unaccounted for, including three children. The vessel, operated by the Madhya Pradesh tourism department, went down around 5 pm after being struck by a violent squall while carrying 41 passengers and crew.

Rescue operations stretched through the night and into Friday, with authorities pulling nine bodies from the water by evening. Twenty-eight people were safely extracted. But the search for the missing—a family group including young children—remained unsuccessful as heavy rains forced rescue teams to suspend diving efforts. Operations will resume Saturday morning.

Storm Hit Without Warning, Says Pilot

The cruise pilot, Mahesh Patel, said the weather conditions changed within moments. With over a decade of experience, he described how the sudden, aggressive winds made the vessel uncontrollable before passengers could even don life jackets. "There was no time to react," he stated in initial accounts.

Officials confirmed that safety gear was aboard, but the intensity of the storm—described as sudden and violent—overwhelmed containment efforts. The vessel, operational since 2006 with a capacity of 60 persons, was carrying fewer passengers than maximum, yet the casualty count remained severe.

Administration Acts Against Negligence

Within hours of the incident, the tourism department moved to hold officials accountable. Cruise pilot Mahesh Patel and helper Chhotelal Gond were terminated. The ticket counter in-charge, Brijendra, was also dismissed on grounds of dereliction of duty.

Sunil Maravi, manager of Hotel Mikal Resort and Boat Club Bargi, was suspended. Regional Manager Sanjay Malhotra was transferred to headquarters pending departmental inquiry. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav warned that those found negligent "will not be spared under any circumstances."

Nation Mobilises for Search

National-level agencies have joined the frantic retrieval effort. The Indian Army deployed personnel alongside state rescue teams. A specialised diving unit from Hyderabad arrived with helicopter support. A paramilitary team from Kolkata was already on ground.

The submerged cruise lies at approximately 20 feet depth, trapped in a challenging underwater position. Rescue teams deployed hydraulic equipment and heavy machinery to locate and retrieve the vessel amid difficult conditions.

Identified Among the Dead

Authorities identified nine casualties by Friday evening:

Neetu Soni, 43, from Jabalpur; Saubhagyam Alagan, 42, from Tamil Nadu; Madhur Maicy, 62, from New Delhi; Kakulazhi, 38, from Jabalpur; Reshma Syed, 66, from Jabalpur; Shamim Naqvi, 68, from Bhopal; Marina Macy, 39, and her four-year-old son Trishan, both from Delhi; and Jyoti Sen from Jabalpur.

A particularly heartbreaking discovery: Marina was found clutching her young son to her chest, even in death, their life jackets holding them together.

Family of 15 Scattered by Tragedy

Kamraj Arya, an Ordnance Factory employee from Khamaria, had organised the outing for 15 family members. His parents remained on shore, but his wife, sister-in-law, and children boarded the cruise. One son was rescued. Kamraj, his wife, and another child remain missing.

Similar scenarios unfolded across the passenger manifest—families separated by the emergency, some fortunate, others not.

Compensation Announced, Questions Remain

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ex gratia of โ‚น2 lakh for each deceased family and โ‚น50,000 for the injured, to be disbursed from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund. State Tourism Minister Dharmendra Lodhi reached Jabalpur to oversee response efforts.

However, questions have surfaced regarding operational protocols. The minister stated that petrol and diesel-powered vessels are prohibited in the Narmada waterway, though the exact nature of the capsized cruise's power system remains under clarification.

Search Continues Saturday

The missing include multiple children. Ground reports suggest family groups are among those unaccounted for. The administration has assured all possible support to affected families, with compensation and relief measures being expedited.

Rescue operations resume at first light Saturday, with focus on the underwater retrieval and completion of the casualty identification process.
