With all three major religious events taking place simultaneously, the Mahakaleshwar Temple administration expects nearly 8–10 lakh devotees from across India and abroad to visit the temple city. Authorities have already begun preparations for crowd management, security, and smooth darshan arrangements.

Rare Coincidence After Seven Years

This is the first time since 2019 that the third Monday of Sawan and Nag Panchami will coincide. The previous occurrence witnessed an overwhelming turnout of devotees who gathered to participate in Lord Mahakal's royal procession and seek blessings at the Nagchandreshwar Temple.

The 2026 event is expected to attract an even larger crowd due to the growing popularity of the Mahakal Corridor and increasing religious tourism in Ujjain.

Nagchandreshwar Temple Opens Only Once a Year

Located atop the Mahakaleshwar Temple, the Nagchandreshwar Temple remains closed for devotees throughout the year and opens only on Nag Panchami for a period of 24 hours.

This unique tradition makes the temple one of the most revered pilgrimage sites during the Sawan month. Thousands of devotees queue through the day and night to offer prayers.

Since the temple opening coincides with the third Monday of Sawan, when Lord Mahakal's grand royal procession is scheduled, the number of visitors is expected to rise significantly.

Administration Preparing Special Arrangements

Mahakaleshwar Temple Administrator Pratham Kaushik said that a dedicated meeting will soon be held to finalize arrangements for the twin events.

Officials from the temple committee, district administration, police, and other departments will jointly prepare a comprehensive plan focusing on:

• Security deployment
• Traffic regulation
• Darshan arrangements
• Emergency medical services
• Public convenience facilities

The administration aims to ensure smooth movement of devotees while maintaining safety during the high-footfall event.

Rare Idol of Nagchandreshwar

The idol installed inside the Nagchandreshwar Temple is believed to date back to the 11th century and is considered unique in Hindu iconography.

The sculpture depicts Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati seated on a serpent with its hood fully spread, making it one of the rarest representations of the deity. Because the sanctum remains closed for the rest of the year, devotees get only one opportunity annually to offer prayers before the sacred idol.
