The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken cognisance of allegations surrounding the waste processing plant operating in Pahadiya village of Rewa district and has issued notices to the Madhya Pradesh government and concerned departments, directing them to file their replies by September 3, 2026.

The matter came before the Central Zone Bench of the NGT in Bhopal after a petition was filed by social activist Abhishek Tiwari, raising concerns over the environmental impact of the waste management facility. Following a preliminary hearing, the tribunal found the matter fit for consideration and sought responses from all respondents along with relevant documents.

Concerns Over Environmental Impact

The petition alleges that the waste plant is adversely affecting the local environment and the lives of residents in Pahadiya Gram Panchayat. It raises concerns regarding possible contamination of groundwater, damage to agricultural land and potential health risks to villagers living near the facility.

According to the petition, the issue has persisted despite repeated representations made to local authorities.

Villagers Continue Protest

Residents of Pahadiya village, supported by social activist Sheshmani, have been campaigning against the waste plant for a considerable period. They claim the facility has created serious environmental and public health concerns, affecting farming activities and daily life in the surrounding area.

The villagers allege that repeated complaints submitted to the administration have failed to bring any concrete relief, prompting them to pursue legal intervention before the NGT.

NGT Warns of Ex-Parte Proceedings

In its notice, the tribunal directed all concerned departments to submit their responses within the stipulated time. It also observed that if replies are not filed before the next hearing, the matter may proceed based on the documents and records already available.

The next hearing has been scheduled for September 3, 2026.

Residents Welcome Tribunal's Intervention

The NGT's decision has been welcomed by local residents, who say the judicial intervention marks an important step in addressing their long-pending grievances.

Many villagers expressed hope that the proceedings would ensure a scientific assessment of the waste plant's environmental impact and lead to appropriate action if violations are established.

The Pahadiya waste plant has remained a subject of local controversy for several months, with residents repeatedly demanding stricter monitoring and remedial measures to safeguard public health and the environment.
