Residents of Ward No. 5 in Rewa's Baikunthpur protested outside the electricity department after a five-day power outage disrupted daily life and raised safety concerns during the monsoon.
Hundreds of residents in Ward No. 5 of Baikunthpur Nagar Parishad in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district have been living without electricity for the past five days, prompting angry locals to stage a protest at the electricity department's office. The prolonged outage has disrupted daily life, with residents alleging that repeated complaints have failed to bring any concrete action from the power utility.
The affected locality, largely inhabited by sanitation workers and daily wage earners, has remained in darkness since the power supply was interrupted earlier this week. With monsoon rains continuing across the region, residents say the lack of electricity has made living conditions increasingly difficult and unsafe.
Five-Day Outage Triggers Public Anger
According to local resident Manoj Basor, electricity supply was disrupted nearly five days ago. Despite informing electricity department officials several times, the fault has not yet been rectified.
As frustration mounted, dozens of residents visited the Baikunthpur electricity centre on Saturday and submitted a memorandum demanding immediate restoration of power. The protest reflected growing resentment over what residents described as official negligence and delayed response.
Daily Life Severely Affected
The prolonged power outage has affected access to drinking water, household chores and children's studies. Residents say evenings have become particularly challenging as the entire neighbourhood remains in complete darkness after sunset.
For families dependent on daily wages, returning home after work only to face hours without electricity has added to their hardship. Many households have also struggled to preserve food and operate essential electrical appliances.
Safety Concerns During Monsoon
Residents expressed serious concerns about safety, especially during the rainy season. They said the absence of street lighting and household electricity has increased the risk of encounters with snakes, scorpions and other poisonous creatures that are commonly seen during the monsoon.
Parents and elderly residents are particularly worried about children's safety while moving around in poorly lit surroundings. Locals warned that the situation could lead to an unfortunate accident if power supply is not restored quickly.
Memorandum Submitted to Officials
Among those who approached the electricity department were Dadua Basor, Sudama Basor, Tulsi Basor, Devdeen Basor, Aganu Basor, Ujagar Basor, Sundar Basor, Chetlal Basor and Bhaiyalal Basor, along with several other residents of the ward.
The delegation demanded that officials immediately repair the fault and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to the locality. They argued that essential public services cannot remain suspended for several days, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
Residents Say Only Assurances Received
According to the protesting residents, department officials accepted their memorandum and assured them that the problem would be resolved soon. However, electricity had not been restored at the time of their protest, further deepening public dissatisfaction.
Residents alleged that repeated assurances without visible action have eroded confidence in the electricity department's response mechanism.
Warning of Larger Protest
The affected families have warned that if electricity is not restored immediately, they will be compelled to launch a larger public agitation. They urged the electricity company to treat the matter as an emergency, citing both public inconvenience and safety concerns.
With the monsoon season underway, residents say uninterrupted electricity is essential for maintaining normal life and preventing avoidable risks. They have called upon the administration to intervene and ensure that the fault is repaired without further delay.
