Significance of the Vrat:
Apra Ekadashi Vrat is considered particularly beneficial for those who wish to be freed from their sins or wish to atone for the faults of their past lives. It is believed that observing this Vrat with devotion and discipline on this day absolves one from major sins like Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin), lying, stealing, and adultery. This Vrat also brings merit and grants peace to the souls of the departed.
Mythological Story:
According to legend, in ancient times, there was a righteous king named Mahidhwaj. His younger brother Vajradhwaj was cruel and envious. Out of jealousy, he murdered his elder brother and buried his body under a Peepal tree in the forest. Due to the untimely death of the king, his soul wandered as a preta (ghost) and resided on the Peepal tree.
One day, Sage Dhoumya passed by and, through his meditation, understood the suffering of the preta. He observed the Apra Ekadashi Vrat and prayed to Lord Vishnu for the release of Mahidhwaj’s soul. Due to the effect of the Vrat, the king was freed from the preta state and attained the heavenly realm.
