Ratha Yatra 2025: “Adhar Pana” Ritual Today
Puri, Orissa
The sacred “Adhar Pana” ritual will be performed today in Puri as part of Ratha Yatra 2025. Learn the spiritual significance of this age-old tradition.
The ancient and revered “Adhar Pana Anushthan” will be celebrated in Puri on Monday, a day after Suna Besha. It is a ritual of offering a sacred drink to Mahaprabhu.
This ceremony, celebrated on Ashadh Shukla Paksha Dwadashi, involves offering sweet, spicy pana (sarbat) to Lord Jagannath, Goddess Subhadra and Lord Balabhadra, who are seated on their grand chariots near the Lion Gate. Large terracotta pots prepared by the artisans of Kumbharpada are filled with a rich mixture of milk cream, sugar, bananas, cheese, spices and herbs and placed near the lips of the deities, symbolizing divine refreshment.
This drink, prepared using water drawn by the Paniya Apata Sevaks from the Supakars, is offered by several temple servants including Pujapanda and Patribadu Sevaks. The pots are then ceremoniously broken, believed to release the trapped souls and purify the chariots, which are guarded by invisible divine protectors known as Rath Rakshaks.
This sacred tradition, full of devotion and symbolism, continues to be an important part of the annual Rath Yatra festival, attracting thousands of devotees and pilgrims to witness its magnificent beauty.
