Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has voiced concern over the health of education reformer and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently on an indefinite hunger strike. Speaking during an interaction at the London Film Festival, the actor appealed for Wangchuk's well-being while also addressing the long-standing belief that the iconic character Phunsukh Wangdu from 3 Idiots was directly inspired by him.
Aamir said he was worried about Wangchuk's health as the fast continues and hoped that a constructive resolution would be reached through dialogue. The actor urged authorities and all stakeholders to find a peaceful solution before the situation worsens.
During the conversation, Aamir also clarified that the popular perception linking Sonam Wangchuk directly to the central character of 3 Idiots is a misconception. He said the film's character was not based solely on Wangchuk and added that respecting the social activist's work does not depend on whether he inspired the fictional role.
According to Aamir, Sonam Wangchuk deserves admiration for his contributions to education, sustainable innovation and environmental awareness irrespective of any cinematic connection. He emphasized that the respect people have for Wangchuk should come from his real-life achievements rather than comparisons with a film character.
The debate over the inspiration behind Phunsukh Wangdu has continued ever since 3 Idiots released in 2009. While many viewers associated the character with Sonam Wangchuk because of his work in alternative education and innovation in Ladakh, both Wangchuk and the film's team have, on different occasions, stated that the character was not a direct portrayal of his life.
Aamir's remarks come at a time when Wangchuk's hunger strike has drawn widespread public attention and support from several personalities across the film industry. A number of actors have expressed concern over his health and called for dialogue to address the issues raised through his protest.
The actor's comments have also renewed discussions around 3 Idiots, one of Indian cinema's most celebrated films. Released in 2009 and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film remains popular for its message on education, innovation and independent thinking. Although audiences have long connected its lead character with Wangchuk, Aamir reiterated that the association should not overshadow the activist's own accomplishments and public service.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that work on 3 Idiots: Part 2 is currently under development, adding fresh interest to the franchise even as conversations surrounding the original film continue.
