Major Soumyabrata Sengupta: High-stakes advisory work, major exits, and a pivot to institution-building
Digital Desk
Major Soumyabrata Sengupta has built a career in some of India’s most demanding professional corridors, where discretion, discipline and speed often matter as much as ideology. In person, he is known for a simple, soft-spoken manner that contrasts with the scale of his work across national security-linked assignments, business exits and public policy strategy.
Across the years, Sengupta has worked with the Government of India across ministries including the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, as well as with the Government of Delhi and the Government of West Bengal, shaping high-impact media campaigns and policy communications at both national and state levels.
He has served as an independent media advisor to the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of External Affairs, supporting strategic communication and narrative planning in sensitive contexts. His work has included representing India across engagements in the United States, Israel, Iran and Russia, and presenting papers at the United Nations on several occasions.
He also undertook a short intelligence-based assignment with the Ministry of Home Affairs, during which he received a commendation by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah as part of the intelligence assessment. Sengupta has also been commended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for national security work in the North East and for contributions during Operation Sindoor. He was granted the honorary rank of Major in the Rajput Regiment of the Territorial Army, an honour that is uncommon for civilians.
Parallel to his government-linked advisory roles, Sengupta built and exited multiple ventures. He founded Spearkraft, which consulted global clients on strategic communication and modern influence ecosystems. Under the same umbrella, he launched Spearkraft Academy, positioned as India’s first influencer school, in 2023. The platform went on to impact the professional journeys of more than 50,000 content creators, helping formalise a fast-growing but often unstructured industry. Spearkraft Academy was sold in 2025 for $10 million.
Earlier exits included BHACo (Budget Home Appliances Co.), sold in 2020 for $2 million, and TRM Mediacom, sold in 2021 for $5 million.
In 2021, Major Soumyabrata Sengupta founded Chanakya Strategic Advisors (CS Advisors), a firm that advised senior political and administrative stakeholders on strategy, policy communication and narrative design. The firm’s public policy and advisory vertical was later sold for $28 million in 2026, with Sengupta’s personal cash takeaway estimated at around $14 million.
The vertical’s work has also attracted scrutiny, reflecting broader debate around public affairs and political consulting in India, where the absence of a formal legal framework often blurs public understanding of advocacy, lobbying and policy advisory.
CS Advisors continues to operate through its remaining verticals and employs a team of 45 people. Its social impact arm is set to focus on environment and sustainability, while its research arm continues work linked to national security and strategic issues.
Sengupta’s overall wealth has been shaped by exits, consulting fees and enterprise value creation. Hurun India Wealth Research has estimated his personal wealth in the $35–40 million range, placing him among the younger self-made entrepreneurs to emerge from India’s modern advisory and communications economy.
Major Soumyabrata Sengupta has argued that India’s business climate is held back less by risk-taking and more by opacity, with undisclosed income and informal financial practices weakening transparency and limiting the economy’s ability to scale to global standards.
Outside consulting and strategy, Sengupta is the author of two books, DETECH: How technology controls you and how to use it wisely and Operation Sindoor: India’s Shadow War and the Truth Behind the Smoke, reflecting his interest in technology, security and governance. An avid reader, he has set himself a personal goal of writing one book every year.
In recent times, he has expanded into civic and cultural work through the Eastern Heritage Foundation, which aims to restore hundreds of endangered heritage homes in eastern and north-eastern India. The initiative positions conservation as both identity preservation and community-linked opportunity.
He has also founded The Sengupta Group, built with his father’s help, and structured as a modern family enterprise with professional governance. The group operates across real estate, security services, healthcare, legal consulting, and tea production, employing more than 1000 people. The family’s net worth is estimated at over $120 million. Sengupta’s entry into the family enterprise comes after building his own independent, self-made track record across startups, advisory work and exits.
