Competition for these top government seats is intense — recent NEET closing ranks for top-tier UP colleges like IMS-BHU and KGMU have fallen under 5,000 for general category candidates through the All India Quota, though exact cutoffs shift each year based on exam difficulty, category, and total applicants. Admission runs entirely through NEET-UG scores, followed by counselling through the relevant quota (All India Quota or State Quota) and seat allotment based on rank and preference.

Beyond the top names
Uttar Pradesh has also significantly expanded its medical education footprint in recent years, adding Autonomous State Medical Colleges in numerous districts and multiple AIIMS campuses (Gorakhpur and Rae Bareli), giving NEET aspirants considerably more options across the state than were available even a decade ago — though the seven institutions above remain the most consistently top-ranked choices for students able to secure the rank required.
