North Korea Unveils Kang Kon Destroyer for Nuclear Response

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has commissioned a new 5,000-ton-class destroyer and declared that the warship will become part of the country's state nuclear response system, marking another step in Pyongyang's effort to build a nuclear-capable navy.

The Kang Kon was formally commissioned during a ceremony at Wonsan Port on North Korea's eastern coast on Sunday, September 6. Kim attended the event and described the vessel as an offensive warship capable of delivering what state media called devastating retaliatory strikes against adversaries.

The announcement comes as North Korea accelerates naval modernisation and expands its nuclear and missile forces amid continuing tensions with the United States and South Korea.

Kang Kon Joins Nuclear System

Kim said the Kang Kon would serve as part of North Korea's state nuclear counteraction system and be deployed with the East Sea Fleet.

According to the Korean Central News Agency, Kim described the destroyer as an offensive platform intended to deliver a deadly retaliatory response against North Korea's enemies.

The precise nuclear weapons that could be deployed on the vessel have not been publicly confirmed. However, North Korean state media said the Kang Kon has the same weapons systems as the country's first 5,000-ton-class destroyer, the Choe Hyon. Analysts have said the weapons associated with that class include missiles potentially capable of carrying nuclear payloads.

Second Destroyer Of Class

The Kang Kon is the second destroyer of the new 5,000-ton class to enter North Korean service.

Its sister ship, the Choe Hyon, was commissioned less than three months earlier. The rapid addition of two large surface combatants represents a significant development for a North Korean navy that has historically relied heavily on smaller vessels.

North Korea has been seeking to strengthen its ability to operate farther from its coastline as Kim pushes for a more modern and strategically capable naval force.

The Kang Kon is named after Kang Kon, a senior North Korean military commander who was killed during the Korean War.

Kim Signals Naval Expansion

Kim used the commissioning ceremony to announce that North Korea's naval expansion would continue.

He said Pyongyang was implementing an important plan to strengthen its naval forces and promised to demonstrate another stage of the programme within eight months, although he did not provide details.

North Korea is also constructing naval facilities on its eastern coast and plans to establish additional naval units and build different classes of warships, according to state media reports.

The programme indicates that Pyongyang wants to make its navy a more important component of its overall nuclear deterrence strategy rather than relying primarily on land-based missile forces.

Earlier Launch Was Delayed

The Kang Kon's path into service has been unusually difficult.

The vessel partially capsized during an attempted launch ceremony in May 2025. It was subsequently repaired and relaunched, before undergoing additional repairs and sea trials.

According to reports, weapons testing was completed in July this year. The ship was eventually commissioned during Sunday's ceremony at Wonsan.

The successful deployment therefore represents the completion of a lengthy construction, repair and testing process.

Nuclear Navy Ambition Grows

Kim has increasingly called for North Korea to develop a navy capable of supporting its nuclear deterrent.

At the Kang Kon ceremony, he stressed the importance of transforming the country's naval forces into a nuclear-armed force capable of contributing to maritime defence and deterrence.

North Korea has already developed a wide range of nuclear-capable ballistic missiles and has continued expanding its strategic weapons programme. The addition of potentially nuclear-capable surface warships could give Pyongyang another platform from which to threaten regional targets.

However, publicly available information does not establish how many nuclear weapons North Korea possesses or whether a nuclear warhead has actually been deployed aboard the Kang Kon.

US Allies Hold Drills

The destroyer's commissioning coincided with a major military exercise involving the United States, South Korea and Japan.

The three countries began the five-day Freedom Edge exercise on September 7 in international waters around the southern Korean Peninsula. The drills are designed to strengthen coordination and deterrence against North Korean nuclear and missile threats.

Pyongyang has repeatedly condemned joint US-South Korean and trilateral military exercises, describing them as preparations for an attack.

The timing of the naval commissioning therefore adds another layer of tension to an already heavily militarised region.

Maritime Nuclear Deterrence

North Korea says its expanding nuclear and naval capabilities are necessary to protect its sovereignty and deter what it describes as hostile actions by Washington and Seoul.

Kim said North Korea's deployment of the Kang Kon to the waters east of the Korean Peninsula demonstrated Pyongyang's determination to exercise what he called sovereignty at sea and underwater.

For the United States and its allies, however, the emergence of nuclear-capable naval platforms could complicate regional defence planning.

The Kang Kon's commissioning does not by itself confirm that North Korea has deployed nuclear weapons at sea. But its integration into the country's declared nuclear response structure signals that Pyongyang increasingly sees naval forces as part of its strategic deterrence architecture.
