Pickles can get spoiled in the rain, know how to keep them safe…
Lifestyle
Pickles are an important part of the Indian diet. Its sour, spicy taste enhances the taste of food even more.
Pickles are made and stored in all our homes for the whole year. But sometimes due to increased humidity in the rainy season, pickles start getting spoiled quickly. But by adopting some simple and effective home remedies, you can keep your pickles safe, tasty and full of freshness for a long time. Some important tips are given below.
Home remedies to prevent pickles from getting spoiled in the rainy season
Use glass or porcelain utensils
Glass or porcelain utensils are better for pickles than plastic or steel. These utensils are capable of handling the moisture and acidity of pickles.
Dry the utensils completely
Before storing the pickle, dry the utensils thoroughly in the sun. If even a little moisture remains, the pickle may get moldy.
Maintain a layer of oil on the pickle
The mustard oil (or the oil in which the pickle is pickled) should be sufficient to cover the pickle. The layer of oil protects the pickle from moisture and air.
Balanced use of dry spices
Spices like salt, turmeric, asafoetida and mustard not only enhance the taste but also keep the pickle from spoiling for a long time.
Store in an airtight container
If the weather is very humid, it is better to store pickles in airtight containers.
Add a little vinegar or lemon juice (optional)
Both of these act as natural preservatives and keep the pickle safe for a long time.
Do not scoop the pickle with a wet spoon
Always use a dry and clean spoon. A wet spoon can bring in moisture and cause the pickle to rot.
Keep in the sun from time to time
Every 8-10 days, keep the pickle container in the sun for a few hours. This kills the bacteria and mold spores present in it.
Things to keep in mind
1-Always keep pickles in a cool and dry place.
2-If mold is seen, remove it immediately and keep the pickle in the sun.
3-If any change is seen in smell, color or taste, stop using pickles.
