Controversy in Maharashtra as Muslim MLA Abdul Sattar Visits Temple on Mahashivratri

A debate has erupted after Abdul Sattar, a Muslim MLA from the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), visited a Shiva temple on Mahashivratri in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Following his visit, a video circulated on social media showing some youths reportedly purifying the temple premises by sprinkling cow urine, citing Sattar’s non-vegetarian dietary habits as the reason.

Abdul Sattar, a three-time MLA from Sillod Assembly constituency and former minister, visited the temple reportedly to offer prayers. The incident drew criticism and divergent reactions from political leaders and the public, reflecting broader debates on religious customs and inclusivity in sacred spaces.

The visit occurred during Mahashivratri, one of the most significant Hindu festivals, at a Shiva temple in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. The video of youths performing ritual purification surfaced shortly after the visit, sparking online discussion and controversy.

The youths involved in the cleansing claimed that someone consuming non-vegetarian food should not enter the temple sanctum on a holy day. Their actions were described as adhering to traditional temple norms, though the incident has raised questions about religious tolerance and communal harmony.

Social media clips show youths sprinkling cow urine inside the temple premises. Abdul Sattar has not issued a statement regarding the incident. Political figures, however, responded promptly. Sanjay Nirupam, former MP and Shiv Sena leader, emphasized that “Shiva belongs to everyone” and stated that opposition to Sattar’s visit was meaningless. He added that Sattar’s prayers did not affect the sanctity of the temple.

In contrast, Tushar Bhosale, head of BJP’s spiritual wing in Wardha, argued that temple traditions must be respected. He said that individuals who have not adopted Hinduism should pray outside the sanctum rather than entering it. Waris Pathan, AIMIM leader, questioned the rationale behind the purification ritual and urged clarity from Sattar regarding his visit.

Abdul Sattar began his political career at the Gram Panchayat level and was previously associated with the Congress party before joining Shiv Sena in 2019. He served as a Minister of State in the Uddhav Thackeray government and later held cabinet positions in the Shinde-Fadnavis government, overseeing Minority Development, Waqf, Agriculture, and Marketing departments.

The incident has highlighted tensions between religious customs and public representation. Analysts note that Sattar’s political position and minority identity have intensified scrutiny of his actions in religious spaces. The episode is likely to fuel discussions on secular access to temples and the role of political figures in communal contexts.
