Earthquake of 5.7 Magnitude Hits Ladakh’s Leh; Tremors Felt in PoK and Delhi-NCR, No Casualties Reported

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck the Leh region of Ladakh on Monday morning, triggering tremors across parts of northern India and neighbouring regions. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed that the quake occurred at 11:51:14 am IST at a depth of 171 kilometres, with its epicentre located at 36.71°N latitude and 74.32°E longitude. No casualties or damage to property have been reported so far.

Around the same day, a mild earthquake of magnitude 2.8 was recorded in Delhi-NCR, briefly shaking parts of the national capital. According to the NCS, the tremor occurred at 8:44 am, with its epicentre in North Delhi at a shallow depth of five kilometres. Residents in several localities reported feeling light vibrations, though officials said the tremor posed no immediate threat.

Tremors were also felt in Sonipat district of Haryana, causing brief concern among residents. This follows a 3.5-magnitude earthquake recorded in the Gohana area three days earlier, which had prompted people to rush out of homes and shops. Authorities reiterated that while such low-intensity quakes are generally harmless, residents should remain alert and follow safety protocols.

In the wider region, an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck parts of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), including Gilgit and nearby areas, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) recorded the tremor at magnitude 5.7, with a depth of 31 kilometres. No immediate reports of casualties or structural damage were received, and local authorities said assessments were underway.

Seismologists noted that the series of tremors underscores the high seismic vulnerability of the Himalayan and Indo-Gangetic regions. Delhi, in particular, lies in Seismic Zone IV, making it prone to moderate to strong earthquakes. Experts have consistently stressed the need for earthquake-resilient infrastructure, public awareness, and adherence to building safety norms.

Officials advised citizens to remain calm, avoid panic, and follow standard safety guidelines during and after tremors. Disaster management agencies continue to monitor seismic activity closely, while emergency services remain on alert in sensitive zones.
