Digital Desk
National Sports Day 2026 will be observed with a three-day nationwide campaign from August 28 to 30 under the theme “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat.”
The Government of India is set to observe National Sports Day 2026 with a three-day nationwide campaign from August 28 to 30, with schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions being encouraged to participate in sports and fitness activities across the country.
The campaign has been proposed under the Fit India Movement, operating under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and will be conducted under the theme “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat.” The initiative will be built around three broad pillars — Tribute, Play and Move. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has also circulated the programme to higher education institutions and Institutions of National Importance, asking them to participate in the celebrations.
Three-Day Sports Campaign
According to the official plan issued by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the first day, August 28, will focus largely on digital mobilisation and activities linked to the Raksha Bandhan occasion. Suggested initiatives include digital tributes, the “29 Challenge”, “Pass the Ball” and “Sports Bandhan”.
August 29, the actual National Sports Day, will be the main on-ground activity day. Institutions and communities have been encouraged to organise sports, fitness, indigenous games, wellness and tribute activities as part of a nationwide participation drive.
The third day, August 30, will focus on active mobility and cycling through a special edition of Sundays on Cycle. The SAI plan also includes a dedicated Run and Ride activity linked to India’s BRICS chairship in 2026.
UGC Asks Institutions to Participate
An official UGC communication dated August 24 said the commission had received communication from the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, forwarding the request from the Director General of the Sports Authority of India regarding the National Sports Day 2026 celebrations.
The UGC asked higher education institutions and Institutions of National Importance to follow the guidelines issued by SAI and make efforts to ensure that the campaign reaches institutions across the country. The Ministry of Education communication also asked for necessary action and the nomination of a nodal officer to facilitate coordination with stakeholders.
The SAI plan allows higher education institutions to adapt activities according to local conditions, available infrastructure, student demographics and institutional requirements, while maintaining safety, accessibility and inclusivity.
National Sports Day on August 29
National Sports Day is observed every year on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of legendary Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand. The 2026 campaign is intended to use the occasion to promote sports participation, fitness and active lifestyles among people of different age groups.
The official SAI communication said the campaign aims to encourage participation among universities, colleges, higher educational institutions, faculty members, students and campus communities across the country.
‘Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein’
One of the central activities planned for August 29 is “Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein”, under which schools, colleges, workplaces and communities can conduct suitable sports and fitness activities.
The proposed activities include annual sports events, fitness festivals, campus games, community sports festivals, cycling and walkathons, team challenges, yoga and other wellness activities. Institutions can select activities according to their facilities and local requirements.
The campaign also features a “29 Challenge”, encouraging participants to perform a physical activity 29 times and share their participation digitally. Suggested challenges include 29 squats, push-ups, skipping repetitions, jumping jacks, lunges, ball bounces and other sport-specific activities.
Sports Bandhan Initiative
The August 28 programme also includes “Sports Bandhan”, connecting the National Sports Day campaign with Raksha Bandhan. Suggested activities include sibling sports challenges, gifting sports equipment or fitness experiences and taking a joint pledge to learn, play or promote a sport.
The official campaign plan also encourages families, schools, colleges and workplace groups to organise friendly matches or simple sports challenges and share their participation through digital platforms.
Nationwide Participation
The SAI roadmap identifies its regional and training centres, national sports federations, states and Union territories, schools, colleges and other partners as key implementation stakeholders. Participation data, photographs, videos and other activity details are also planned to be collected through a central reporting mechanism.
With the three-day programme beginning on August 28, the 2026 National Sports Day celebrations are expected to combine digital participation, institutional sports activities and community-based fitness initiatives, culminating on August 30 with cycling and other active-mobility programmes.
