Prime Minister Narendra Modi reinforced India’s environmental commitment by planting a Kadamba sapling gifted by Britain’s King Charles at the Prime Minister’s residence on Thursday. The sapling, arriving on Modi’s 74th birthday on September 17, is inspired by his flagship “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, which encourages every Indian to plant a tree in honor of their mothers.
The British High Commission announced the gesture on X, stating, “The King is delighted to have sent a Kadamba tree to Prime Minister Modi on his birthday. Inspired by the Prime Minister’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative, this gesture reflects their shared commitment to environmental conservation.” A ceremonious planting followed by watering highlighted the ongoing collaboration between India and the United Kingdom on green priorities.
This event echoes PM Modi’s earlier environmental action on June 5, World Environment Day, when he planted a Sindoor plant at the official residence. That sapling was a gift from a group of brave women veterans of the 1971 India-Pakistan war during his visit to Kutch on May 25–26. Addressing the gathering in Bhuj, the Prime Minister lauded their courage and reaffirmed India’s steadfast stance on national security.
By integrating these symbolic plantings first the Sindoor plant on World Environment Day and now the Kadamba sapling the Prime Minister continues to spotlight tree plantation as both a cultural tribute and a climate action measure. The Kadamba, native to South Asia, is prized for its medicinal properties and ecological value, making it an apt emblem for India’s biodiversity goals.
These initiatives dovetail with India’s broader environmental targets under the National Green India Mission, aiming to expand green cover and tackle climate change. The “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign has already mobilized thousands across cities and villages, furthering Modi’s vision of a greener, healthier India.
As world leaders prepare for the upcoming COP30 summit, such high-profile tree-planting gestures underscore India’s active role in global conservation efforts planting seeds of hope today for a sustainable tomorrow.
