India celebrated its 80th Independence Day on Saturday, August 15, 2026, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi unfurling the national flag from the Red Fort and delivering his 13th consecutive Independence Day address from the historic ramparts.

This year’s celebrations focused on the theme ‘Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047’, while also marking 150 years of Vande Mataram. In his address, PM Modi urged citizens to think beyond small goals and work towards the larger ambition of making India a developed nation by 2047.

Vande Mataram at Red Fort

The Independence Day ceremony witnessed a significant first, with Vande Mataram being performed live at the Red Fort as part of celebrations marking the national song’s 150th anniversary.

The ceremony also featured the traditional 21-gun salute after the flag was unfurled. For the first time, the ceremonial salute was conducted using indigenously manufactured equipment, including Indian-made 105mm Light Field Guns.

‘Small Dreams No Longer Enough’

A major theme of PM Modi’s speech was the need for India to set bigger ambitions for its future.

Addressing the nation, the Prime Minister said, “Small dreams will no longer suffice. We must dream big,” adding that big dreams expand thinking and broaden the horizons of aspirations.

PM Modi said India’s resolve to become a developed nation by 2047 is also changing how the world views the country.

He said that when the world’s most populous nation sets an ambitious goal of becoming developed, it reflects India’s confidence and encourages the international community to view the country from a different perspective.

100 GW Nuclear Power Target

Energy security also featured prominently in the Prime Minister’s Independence Day address.

PM Modi said the government is working towards increasing India’s nuclear power capacity to 100 GW by 2047. He also announced a target of beginning work on five new nuclear reactors during the current decade.

The Prime Minister described energy security as an important requirement for India’s long-term development and linked the expansion of nuclear power with the country’s broader Viksit Bharat vision.

PM Modi Acknowledges Citizens

From the Red Fort, PM Modi acknowledged the contribution of citizens from different sections of society to India’s development over the past 12 years.

He referred to Dalits, marginalised communities, tribals, rural and urban residents, the poor, middle class, youth, elderly people, women and men, saying their efforts and determination had helped India reach new milestones.

The Prime Minister also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, freedom fighters and revolutionaries who contributed to India's struggle for Independence.

Youth at the Centre

Youth remained a major focus of this year’s Independence Day celebrations.

Around 5,000 special guests attended the Red Fort ceremony. The group included young innovators, beneficiaries of the PM Internship Scheme, people associated with the startup ecosystem and beneficiaries of skill development programmes.

Students who won medals at the 2026 International Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematical Olympiads were also among those invited.

Young people associated with skill development initiatives and My Bharat Volunteers, along with students selected through quizzes and competitions organised by Delhi government schools, were also part of the special guest list.

AI Translation in 22 Languages

Technology played a prominent role in this year’s celebrations.

PM Modi’s Independence Day speech was made available for real-time AI-powered translation into 22 Indian languages through the Digital India Bhashini platform.

The initiative was aimed at allowing citizens to follow the Prime Minister’s address in their preferred Indian language and making the speech accessible to a wider audience across the country.

Security Arrangements

Extensive security arrangements were put in place around the Red Fort for the Independence Day ceremony.

Around 2,500 NCC cadets were also part of the celebrations alongside the special guests. Security agencies maintained heightened surveillance in and around the venue as the national capital hosted the country’s main Independence Day event.
