Chasing 207, Afghanistan reached 207 for seven in 44.5 overs. Rashid Khan remained unbeaten on 37 from 43 balls and guided his team through a tense final phase alongside Yamin Ahmadzai.

Ireland Bowled Out For 206

Ireland, after being asked to bat first, were dismissed for 206 in 46.3 overs. Afghanistan's bowlers kept the hosts under pressure throughout the innings and created the platform for the successful chase.

Rashid was again central to Afghanistan's performance. The leg-spinner claimed three wickets before returning to make the decisive contribution with the bat.

The result also gave Afghanistan a 2-0 lead in the five-match ODI series.

Afghanistan appeared in danger when the visitors slipped to 176 for seven during the chase. Rashid then took responsibility and stayed at the crease until the target was reached.

He struck four boundaries in his unbeaten 37 and combined with Yamin Ahmadzai for the final partnership. Yamin finished unbeaten on four from 26 deliveries as Afghanistan completed the chase with 31 balls remaining.

Rashid's all-round contribution earned him the Player of the Match award.

Top Eight Brings Reward

The victory was significant beyond the bilateral series because Afghanistan needed to secure its position among the top eight teams in the ODI rankings by September 30.

According to Reuters, the win guaranteed Afghanistan a top-eight finish and therefore direct entry into the 2027 World Cup. Afghanistan joined Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England and Bangladesh among the teams qualifying through the rankings, while South Africa and Zimbabwe have places as co-hosts.

West Indies Miss Direct Spot

Afghanistan's qualification has major consequences for the West Indies. The Caribbean side, currently ranked 10th, cannot move into the automatic qualification positions before the cut-off even with its remaining ODIs against India. It will therefore have to take the qualification route.

The West Indies missed the 2023 ODI World Cup after failing to progress through the qualifiers. This will be another difficult route for the two-time world champions.

The 2027 ODI World Cup will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Afghanistan's qualification will give the team its fourth appearance at the men's 50-over World Cup.
