Bastar Performs First-Ever Successful Heart Valve Replacement Surgery in Jagdalpur

Doctors at CCSH Jagdalpur have successfully performed Bastar's first Mitral Valve Replacement surgery, marking a major milestone in advanced cardiac healthcare in the region.

Bastar has achieved a significant milestone in advanced healthcare after doctors at the Continental Chhattisgarh Super Speciality Hospital (CCSH) in Jagdalpur successfully performed the region's first Mitral Valve Replacement (MVR) surgery. The complex cardiac procedure has provided a new lease of life to a 27-year-old woman from Farsaguda village, who had been battling severe heart complications for several months.

According to hospital officials, the patient had been experiencing persistent breathlessness, extreme fatigue and declining physical strength for nearly seven months. Despite undergoing multiple medical examinations, the underlying cause of her condition remained undiagnosed until she was referred to CCSH for specialised cardiac evaluation.

Severe Heart Valve Damage Detected

At CCSH, Non-Invasive Cardiologist Dr. Mayuri Sharad conducted a detailed echocardiography examination, which revealed that the patient's mitral valve had been severely damaged, resulting in left-sided heart failure. The diagnosis indicated that immediate specialised treatment was essential to prevent further deterioration.

Following the assessment, a multidisciplinary cardiac team initiated intensive medical management to stabilise the patient's condition before surgery.

Three Weeks of Treatment Before Surgery

Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon Dr. Manoj Kumar Maharana, along with Cardiac Anaesthetist and Critical Care Specialist Dr. Saurabh Kumar, first focused on treating the patient's heart failure.

After nearly three weeks of continuous monitoring and medical therapy, doctors determined that she was fit to undergo open-heart surgery. The medical team then decided to perform a Mitral Valve Replacement, one of the most complex cardiac procedures.

Four-Hour Operation Successfully Completed

During the surgery, doctors removed the patient's completely damaged mitral valve and replaced it with a mechanical heart valve. The operation lasted for more than four hours and was completed successfully.

Following the procedure, the patient was kept on ventilator support for a short period before being gradually weaned off after regaining consciousness. Hospital authorities said her condition is stable and she is recovering well under close medical supervision.

Doctors expect the patient to be discharged within the next week if her recovery continues without complications.

Team Effort Behind the Success

The surgery was led by Dr. Manoj Kumar Maharana and Dr. Saurabh Kumar, with support from Dr. Mayuri Sharad, perfusionists Madhu and Rasool, and nursing staff including Nandini, Phoolo, and Manoj.

Hospital officials described the operation as the result of coordinated efforts by a multidisciplinary cardiac team and advanced medical infrastructure now available in Bastar.

Boost for Healthcare in Bastar

CCSH management termed the successful procedure a landmark achievement for healthcare services in the Bastar region.

Hospital Director Raghu N. Reddy said the availability of advanced cardiac surgery in Jagdalpur would significantly reduce the need for critically ill patients to travel to metropolitan cities for specialised treatment.

He added that the hospital remains committed to expanding advanced healthcare facilities in the region and providing access to complex medical procedures closer to patients' homes.

The successful heart valve replacement marks a major step forward in strengthening tertiary healthcare services in Bastar and is expected to benefit patients requiring specialised cardiac treatment in the future.
