Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth has created history by becoming the first woman officer to graduate from the Indian Air Force’s prestigious Fighter Combat Leader (FCL) course, marking another major milestone for women in India’s military aviation.

Kanth, who flies the Sukhoi-30MKI fighter aircraft, completed the elite combat training programme at the Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment (TACDE) in Gwalior.

The achievement places her among a select group of fighter pilots to have completed one of the Indian Air Force’s most demanding advanced combat courses.

Elite ‘Top Gun’ Training

The Fighter Combat Leader course is often compared to the "Top Gun" programmes associated with advanced fighter training worldwide.

The intensive programme runs for around 20 weeks and focuses on advanced air combat tactics, operational planning and tactical decision-making.

TACDE, based in Gwalior, is responsible for imparting specialised training to experienced fighter pilots and preparing them for complex combat scenarios.

Only a small proportion of fighter pilots are selected for the course, making Kanth’s graduation significant within the IAF’s fighter community.

Flying the Sukhoi-30MKI

Kanth currently operates the Sukhoi-30MKI, one of the Indian Air Force’s principal multirole fighter aircraft.

The twin-engine fighter is capable of carrying out a range of missions, including air superiority, ground attack and long-range operations.

Qualifying as a Fighter Combat Leader requires pilots to demonstrate advanced tactical skills and the ability to operate effectively in demanding combat environments.

Kanth’s completion of the course therefore represents not only a milestone for women officers but also a significant professional achievement within the IAF’s fighter stream.

Part of Historic First Batch

Kanth was among the first three women fighter pilots commissioned into the Indian Air Force in 2016.

She entered the fighter stream alongside Avani Chaturvedi and Mohana Singh, following the government's decision to open the fighter pilot role to women on a permanent experimental basis.

Since then, the three officers have become prominent figures in India's effort to expand women's participation in combat aviation.

Earlier Milestones

Kanth has previously achieved several milestones during her career.

She became the first woman fighter pilot to qualify for day combat missions on the MiG-21 Bison.

In 2021, she also became the first woman fighter pilot to participate in the Republic Day flypast, further establishing her place in the history of India's military aviation.

Her latest achievement builds on that record and reflects the increasing presence of women in operational roles within the armed forces.
