From Classroom to CM’s Office: Former Teacher Recalls Mohan Yadav’s Early Leadership and Academic Discipline

Long before he assumed office as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Mohan Yadav displayed the discipline, responsibility and leadership that would later define his political career, according to his former schoolteacher Kokila Sen. Speaking at the State-Level Educational Quality Teachers’ Conference in Bhopal on Wednesday, Sen offered rare insights into Yadav’s formative years as a student in Ujjain.

Kokila Sen, who taught Physics at Government Jeevajiganj School in Ujjain between 1979 and 1981, recalled that Dr. Yadav stood out from his peers for his calm demeanor and willingness to help others. From classes 9 to 12, she said, he was known as a dependable student whom classmates trusted to raise their concerns with teachers.

“If students had an issue or request, they would ask Mohan Yadav to speak on their behalf,” Sen said. “He was respectful, composed and never hesitant to take responsibility. Even then, his leadership qualities were visible.”

According to Sen, Yadav maintained a strong academic record while actively participating in sports and extracurricular activities, reflecting a balanced approach to education. “He gave equal importance to studies and physical activity. Such balance is rare and speaks of inner discipline,” she noted.

Although Sen taught him Physics, she recalled that Biology was his favourite subject. The proximity of the biology and physics laboratories meant Yadav frequently visited to observe experiments and study models. “Many students fear Physics and Mathematics, but he approached every subject with curiosity,” she said.

Sen emphasised that Yadav required no corrective discipline. “Some students don’t need to be moulded; they need guidance and encouragement. He was one of them,” she remarked, adding that respectful conduct towards teachers came naturally to him.

The teacher also recalled meeting Yadav after he became Education Minister. “I told him this was only the beginning and that greater responsibilities awaited him,” she said. “Today, seeing him as Chief Minister, that moment feels prophetic.”

Despite occupying the state’s highest office, Sen said Yadav’s attitude towards his teachers has remained unchanged. “When he met me after becoming Chief Minister, his behaviour and respect were exactly the same as during his school days,” she said.

Her reflections underline a consistent narrative: that the values of discipline, accountability and respect for education, evident in Dr. Mohan Yadav’s school years, have endured throughout his public life. As Madhya Pradesh continues to focus on education reforms, such recollections highlight the lasting influence of early academic environments on leadership and governance.
