Digital desk
An STF inspector posted in Bhopal has gone missing after a rape case was registered against him in Gwalior on a woman's complaint. Police have launched a search for Anand Kumar, who has been accused of allegedly sexually exploiting the woman for several years on the promise of marriage.
On Saturday, Gwalior Police conducted raids at more than 12 suspected locations across Gwalior, Bhopal and Bhind in an effort to trace the inspector. However, investigators have so far been unable to locate him. Police are also collecting information about his relatives and acquaintances who may be in contact with him.
The case was registered at the Gwalior Women's Police Station earlier this week. The complaint relates to alleged incidents beginning in 2022, when Anand Kumar was posted as a sub-inspector at Thatipur police station in Gwalior.
Woman Met Inspector During Police Case
According to the complaint, the 34-year-old woman, who lives in the Thatipur area, came into contact with the then-sub-inspector in 2022 while dealing with a marital separation-related case at the police station.
The woman has alleged that Kumar took her phone number on the pretext of helping resolve her case and subsequently began communicating with her. According to her complaint, on the night of October 10, 2022, he allegedly went to her rented accommodation and sexually assaulted her after promising to marry her.
Allegedly Promised Marriage After Wife's Death
The woman has further alleged that Kumar told her his wife was suffering from late-stage cancer and would not survive for long. He allegedly assured her that he would marry her after his wife's death.
According to the complaint, the woman trusted the assurance and continued her relationship with him. She alleged that Kumar later arranged a separate rented house for her and lived with her in a live-in relationship.
The woman has alleged that the relationship continued until April 2025. She further claimed that after Kumar was promoted and posted as an STF inspector, she asked him to marry her, but he allegedly refused.
She also accused him of threatening her with serious consequences when she objected to his refusal.
Inspector Goes Missing After Case
Following registration of the FIR, Kumar reportedly went on leave and has since remained untraceable. Police teams searched several locations believed to be connected to him, including addresses in Gwalior, Bhopal and Bhind.
Investigators are now examining his contacts and trying to determine whether he is staying with or communicating with relatives or acquaintances.
Both Mobile Phones Switched Off
Police said Kumar was using two mobile numbers. Investigators attempted to contact him on both numbers, but they were found switched off. As a result, his current location could not immediately be established through the phones.
Three Teams Searching for Him
DSP Women Safety Shikha Soni said the inspector went missing after the rape case was registered against him. More than 12 locations, including places in his home district, have been searched so far.
Three police teams, including personnel from the Women's Police Station, are working to trace the accused inspector. Police are also examining available information and contacts to determine his whereabouts.
The allegations in the case are under investigation, and the accused has not yet been arrested.
