Indore to Develop ₹500-Crore Saraswati–Kanh Riverfront; IDA Approves Major Urban, Sports Projects

In a landmark move to boost urban sustainability and livability, the Indore Development Authority (IDA) has given the green light for the ambitious Saraswati–Kanh riverfront development project under the Government of India’s Urban Challenge Fund. Valued at ₹500 crore, the project includes comprehensive beautification, infrastructure upgrades, and the rehabilitation of nearly 3,500 encroachments along the riverbanks.

05 (9)The decisions were taken at the IDA’s board meeting on Wednesday, chaired by Divisional Commissioner Deepak Singh, with Collector Asheesh Singh, IDA CEO RP Ahirwar, and IMC Commissioner Shivam Verma in attendance.


Major Highlights of the IDA Board Meeting

1. Saraswati–Kanh Riverfront Development

  • Aim: Transform the riverbanks into an aesthetic, green, and accessible public space.
  • Includes:
    • Pedestrian pathways, recreational areas, and seating zones
    • Integrated drainage and flood management systems
    • Rehabilitation and resettlement of 3,500 encroachments, ensuring social compliance

This project is expected to elevate Indore’s urban identity and create new recreational hubs for residents and tourists alike.


2. New Township Development Schemes

In response to Indore’s rapid population growth and industrial expansion, the IDA approved three township schemes:

  • Along Dhar Road
  • Near MPIDC-developed Economic Corridor (Pithampur Road)
  • Near bypass land adjacent to IDA plots

These projects aim to facilitate industrial investment, housing demand, and integrated urban expansion.


3. Major Investment in Sports & Recreation

Indore’s sports infrastructure is set for a significant upgrade:

  • ₹10 crore sports complex at Dussehra Maidan, Annapurna Road
  • Tennis & Sports Academy (₹3 crore) near Ring Road swimming pool
    • To be operated by a national-level athlete or ex-coach, ensuring professional training standards
  • Super Corridor Sports Complex to be upgraded under the PPP model
    • Venue will also host large-scale events and concerts, creating multi-use facilities

4. Inclusive and Cultural Development

  • ₹3 crore library for the differently abled on the Devi Ahilya Library campus
    • Features: Barrier-free design, assistive technologies, and specialized resources
  • Financial aid of ₹2 lakh each to five Ganesh mandals for their Ganesh visarjan tableaux
  • Additional funds allocated for IDA’s own tableau during the event

5. PPP Projects to Boost Economy & Leisure

IDA cleared multiple Public-Private Partnership projects aimed at expanding commercial and recreational zones:

  • Commercial complex on the Super Corridor, supporting real estate and business growth
  • Redevelopment of Meghdoot Garden and Mangal Merryland areas into a recreational hub
    • Plans to revive defunct water park facilities and integrate modern amenities

The approved projects reflect the IDA’s commitment to inclusive urban planning, sustainable infrastructure, and a citizen-centric development model. Officials indicated that the execution will be phased over the next 24–36 months, with a focus on public participation and environmental safeguards.
