BJP Councillors Protest Against Rewa Municipal Officials Over Civic Issues and Waterlogging

BJP councillors protested during the Rewa Municipal Corporation Council meeting by presenting bangles to officials, raising concerns over delayed civic works, waterlogging and poor drainage.

The Rewa Municipal Corporation Council meeting witnessed high political drama on Tuesday after BJP councillors staged an unusual protest against the civic administration, symbolically presenting bangles to municipal officials and the Municipal Commissioner to express their dissatisfaction over unresolved public issues.

In a rare development, the protest came from the ruling party's own councillors rather than the opposition, highlighting growing frustration over delayed civic works and unfulfilled assurances.

Councillors Question Civic Administration

During the meeting, BJP councillors accused municipal officials of failing to address basic civic problems despite repeated assurances.

They said commitments made by the administration remained confined to paperwork, while residents continued to face issues related to roads, drainage, sanitation and other essential services.

The councillors argued that public anger was increasingly being directed at elected representatives, even though implementation of development works rested with the administration.

Council Chairperson Voices Concern

Council Chairperson Venkatesh Pandey also expressed concern during the meeting, stating that residents hold public representatives accountable for civic shortcomings.

He said councillors often face criticism and public dissatisfaction when developmental works are delayed. According to him, failure to resolve local issues on time could adversely affect the credibility of elected representatives.

Promises Made Two Weeks Ago Under Scrutiny

The councillors reminded officials that a review meeting had been held with the Municipal Commissioner around two weeks ago, during which assurances were given regarding the resolution of several pending issues.

However, they claimed that little progress had been made since then.

They also pointed to the recent spell of rainfall, saying it exposed shortcomings in the corporation's preparedness. Roads dug up for construction work in the Civil Lines area remain incomplete, causing inconvenience to commuters and increasing the risk of accidents.

Waterlogging Dominates Discussion

Waterlogging emerged as one of the major issues during the council proceedings.

Councillors alleged that even moderate rainfall resulted in flooding across several residential localities, with water entering houses in some areas. They said the situation reflected inadequate drain cleaning and poor stormwater management by the civic body.

Members urged the administration to take immediate corrective measures before the monsoon intensifies further.

Administrative Performance Under Spotlight

The protest by ruling party councillors has drawn attention to the functioning of the Rewa Municipal Corporation, as it is uncommon for members of the governing party to publicly demonstrate against their own administration.

The symbolic gesture of presenting bangles underscored the growing frustration among elected representatives, who said they are under increasing pressure from residents seeking timely solutions to everyday civic problems.

The municipal administration is now expected to respond to the concerns raised during the meeting and outline a roadmap for addressing pending development works and improving drainage infrastructure across the city.
