President Droupadi Murmu, in her address to the nation on the eve of India’s 80th Independence Day, said the true meaning of freedom lies in ensuring that every citizen gets the opportunity to fulfil their aspirations and contribute to the country’s progress.

Extending her greetings to citizens across India and Indians living abroad, Murmu said Independence Day is not only an occasion to celebrate the country’s freedom from British rule but also a time to remember the responsibilities that come with it.

Freedom Beyond Independence

Recalling August 15, 1947, the President said India’s independence placed the responsibility of shaping the nation’s future in the hands of its citizens.

She said the Tricolour remains a powerful symbol of India’s freedom and is unfurled with pride by people across the country and around the world.

Murmu emphasised that freedom must translate into opportunities for citizens to pursue their dreams and participate in nation-building.

According to the President, every citizen has a role in helping India achieve its ambition of becoming the foremost nation in the world.

Citizens Driving Nation-Building

The President highlighted the contribution of people from different sections of society to India’s development.

She specifically mentioned students and teachers, scientists and engineers, doctors and healthcare workers, workers across different sectors and farmers, whom she described as the country’s “Annadata farmers”.

Murmu said their dedication forms an important part of India’s continuing journey of development.

Recognition for Every Profession

The President also acknowledged the contributions of sportspersons, artisans, artists and intellectuals, along with employees working in both the private and public sectors.

Elected representatives and members of the judiciary, civil servants, investors, social workers and sanitation workers were also recognised for their role in strengthening the country.

Murmu said nation-building cannot be limited to people occupying prominent positions or working in particular professions.

She stressed that every citizen who faithfully performs the Fundamental Duties enshrined in the Constitution becomes a partner in the nation-building process.

Tribute to Security Forces

The President paid tribute to members of the country's security forces, including personnel of the three Armed Forces, Armed Police Forces and police organisations.

She praised their commitment to protecting the nation and maintaining internal security, describing their service as an important contribution to India's continued progress.

Diaspora’s Global Contribution

Murmu also acknowledged Indians living overseas and officials serving at Indian diplomatic missions across the world.

She said the Indian diaspora and personnel working in Indian embassies continue to strengthen India's image and standing internationally.

Her message came as the country prepared to celebrate its 80th Independence Day, marking another milestone in India's journey since independence in 1947.

The President's address placed emphasis on a broader understanding of freedom — one linked not only to political independence but also to equal opportunities, individual aspirations and the collective responsibility of citizens towards the nation.
