Tibet Flood: 5,000 Missing as Search Continues at Border

International media outlets have been allowed to visit the flood-ravaged Gyirong border crossing in Tibet for the first time since a devastating disaster struck the China-Nepal frontier on August 26. The visit was organised by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and included journalists from Reuters and other international media organisations, offering an on-ground view of the destruction and the ongoing search operation.

The disaster followed what Chinese authorities described as a glacier-related event on the Nepal side of the border, sending a powerful surge of water, mud and debris towards the Gyirong area. The flooding severely damaged the border crossing and surrounding infrastructure. According to figures cited by Chinese authorities, 43 people had been confirmed dead on the Chinese side by Saturday, while 519 remained missing. Among those reported missing were 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries, including 49 Indians.

The wider disaster across China and Nepal has reportedly left more than 1,300 people dead and more than 5,000 missing. However, figures are still being updated as rescue and identification efforts continue on both sides of the border.

Border crossing reduced to rubble

Journalists visiting the site saw rescue workers searching through thick layers of mud and debris using excavators, shovels and ground-penetrating radar. The scale of destruction was particularly visible at the Gyirong Port, an important crossing between Tibet and Nepal.

A five-storey customs building that previously stood at the site has been destroyed, while a border gate reportedly measuring around 20 metres in height was also buried under the debris. Only part of a nearby water tower remained visible.

The area around the former border gate was covered with brown and black mud and wreckage. Chinese workers were continuing excavation behind warning barriers as authorities searched for missing people and possible remains.

Identification of bodies remains a challenge

Chinese rescue teams are collecting fingerprints and other identifying characteristics, including tattoos, to help establish the identities of recovered bodies. Authorities have also reportedly recovered 993 personal belongings that could assist in matching missing people with the remains.

The identification process has raised concerns among families of missing foreign nationals and diplomatic representatives. Reuters quoted representatives from four countries as seeking greater clarity from China over the identification process, including whether DNA testing would be carried out and how CCTV or facial-recognition footage from the border area might be used.

China’s Foreign Ministry has maintained that information about the disaster has been provided in a timely and transparent manner and said it is willing to work with other countries and agencies.

Key trade and pilgrimage route badly hit

Gyirong is an important route linking Tibet and Nepal for trade, transport and cross-border movement. Its importance increased after the 2015 earthquake damaged another major route further east.

The crossing has been used for the movement of goods from China into Nepal, including electric vehicles, and is also an important route for pilgrims travelling through Nepal towards Mount Kailash in Tibet.

The latest disaster has therefore affected not only local communities and rescue operations but also a strategically important commercial and pilgrimage corridor.

Chinese authorities are considering rebuilding the border facility. Officials indicated that any reconstruction could incorporate design changes intended to reduce the potential impact of similar disasters in the future.

Glacier lakes raise wider concerns

The latest disaster has renewed attention on the growing risks associated with glaciers and glacial lakes in the Himalayan region. Chinese scientists cited in the report said Tibet and surrounding areas contain more than 3,000 glacial lakes, with 187 identified as higher-risk sites.

These lakes are monitored through ground-based systems as well as remote sensors. Chinese emergency officials have stressed the importance of strengthening monitoring and early-warning mechanisms so that communities and infrastructure can receive more timely alerts.

The issue also highlights the need for cooperation among countries sharing the Himalayan region, where glacier-related flooding and other climate-linked hazards can cross national boundaries.

49 Indians among those reported missing

The disaster has particular significance for India because 49 Indian nationals were among those listed as missing on the Chinese side, according to Chinese authorities cited in the report.

Several of the missing foreign nationals are believed to have been pilgrims travelling through Nepal towards Mount Kailash. The scale of the incident has made identification and communication with families a major challenge for authorities and diplomatic missions.

For now, rescue teams remain engaged in clearing debris and searching for missing people at Gyirong. The international media visit provides a rare direct view of the damage, while questions over the exact sequence of events, the safety of glacier-fed areas and the final number of casualties are expected to remain central as rescue and investigation efforts continue.
