Sunny Deol Opens Up on ₹55.99 Crore Debt & Juhu Property Notice

Sunny Deol reflects on his ₹55.99 crore debt notice, career shifts, and how he maintained peace of mind before his comeback with Gadar 2.

In a recent appearance on Shubhankar Mishra's podcast, Bollywood star Sunny Deol candidly discussed the financial pressures he faced prior to the blockbuster success of Gadar 2, including the 2023 bank auction notice served on his Juhu property for an outstanding debt of ₹55.99 crore.

Overview of Sunny Deol's Financial & Career Highlights: ├── Directorial Projects : 'Dillagi', 'Ghayal Returns' (2016), 'Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas' ├── 2023 Debt Notice : ₹55.99 crore loan linked to 'Ghayal Returns'; settled with bank ├── Historic Box Office : 'Gadar' and 'Indian' (2001) outperformed contemporaries like 'Lagaan' └── Recent Project : 'Batwara 1947' featuring Preity Zinta, Ali Fazal, and Karan Deol

Perspective on Financial Strain and Assets

Deol revealed that despite the mounting debt linked to his self-produced directorial projects—such as Ghayal Returns, Dillagi, and Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas—he remained content because the liability was entirely tied to his own business commitments.

Sunny Deol's Statement: “I can’t do so many things for money. But to be very honest, I’m very happy. Even when I was in debt, I was very happy. I was living my life. The money I owed was all mine. I didn’t borrow it from anyone. I didn’t owe anyone anything. I just had to sell my own assets and pay back.”
The public auction notice issued in 2023 for his Juhu property was subsequently withdrawn after Deol agreed to settle the outstanding dues.

Evolving Industry Dynamics and Success

Reflecting on his career trajectory, Deol recalled the year 2001 when Gadar and Indian achieved immense commercial success. He noted that Indian did two to three times the business of Lagaan, while Gadar scaled even higher.

However, Deol explained that the arrival of corporate studios changed the film industry's structure, making it difficult for him to secure desired subjects and directors. External factors, such as protests surrounding his 2005 release Jo Bole So Nihaal, also impacted his career pace until Gadar 2 marked a major commercial turnaround.

Deol is currently starring in the Partition drama Batwara 1947 alongside Preity Zinta, Ali Fazal, Shabana Azmi, and Karan Deol.
