Fresh herbs are a very important part of cooking. They enhance the taste of any vegetable or salad and you can also use them in drinks. But as soon as you bring them home, they start wilting and their color starts turning black. In such a situation, instead of buying these herbs daily, it is better to store them in such a way, so that you can use them for a long time.
There are two types of herbs
Herbs can be divided into two categories. Hard herbs like thyme, rosemary, sage and oregano, which are used more during cooking than sprinkling on dishes. On the other hand, herbs like basil, mint, coriander come under the soft category, which spoil quickly. Also, they are used after the dishes are prepared.
Clean thoroughly first
Irrespective of the category of herbs, it is necessary to wash them thoroughly and dry them. These herbs start spoiling quickly due to the dust and bacteria on them.
First remove the rubber band used to tie the bunches and keep them immersed in a large vessel of cold water. Washing under the tap in a strong stream can spoil their leaves.
After washing, you can use a salad spinner to remove water thoroughly. After this, spread them well on a paper towel or kitchen towel and wipe them with light hands.
Store like this
To store hard herbs, wrap them on a slightly wet paper towel and then roll them and keep them inside a plastic bag and store them in the refrigerator. By storing these herbs in this way, these herbs do not spoil for 2 to 3 weeks.
Storing soft herbs is a little difficult. The best way to store them is to cut the stem from the bottom and keep the bunch in a jug filled with water, just like you decorate flowers in a vase.
Cover this jug with a plastic bag as much as possible and zip it and then store this jug in the refrigerator. By storing in this way, these herbs easily last for a week.
You can also store basil at room temperature, just do not keep it in direct sunlight or too much heat.
You can also wrap soft herbs in a wet kitchen towel like hard herbs, but by storing them in this way, they last only for 2-3 days. It depends on your need, within how many days you have to use them.
