Justice BR Gavai: From Amravati's Slums to India's First Buddhist Chief Justice

Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Maharashtra, was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14, 2025. He is the first Buddhist and second Dalit to hold this esteemed position. Raised in a semi-slum area and educated in a municipal school, Justice Gavai attributes his success to the transformative power of the Indian Constitution and the vision of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar . His legal career began in 1985, and after serving as a judge in the Bombay High Court, he was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019. Justice Gavai has authored over 300 judgments, including landmark decisions on Article 370 and demonetization . His appointment as CJI marks a significant milestone in India's judicial history, reflecting progress in diversity and representation.

Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai has taken oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the President administered the oath of office and secrecy to him in a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice BR Gavai's father Ramakrishna Suryabhan Gavai had adopted Buddhism along with Dr. BR Ambedkar. Justice BR Gavai's term will end on 23 November 2025.

Justice Gavai is India's first Buddhist CJI and he is the second CJI from the Dalit community in the country after independence. His tenure as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court will be six months. Justice BR Gavai's father Ramakrishna Suryabhan Gavai had adopted Buddhism along with Dr. BR Ambedkar.
