NBSS and NTC Join Hands to Empower Weavers and Artisans

The People Forum of India – National Bharat Sevak Samaj (NBSS) and the National Textile Corporation (NTC) Limited, a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Textiles, have initiated a collaborative dialogue aimed at supporting weavers and artisans across the nation.

The meeting took place in New Delhi between Dr. Bhargav Mallappa, National Deputy Chairman of NBSS, and Mr. Ashutosh Gupta, Director (HR) of NTC). Both leaders emphasized the importance of preserving traditional skills while providing artisans with modern tools, training, and access to larger markets.

Dr. Mallappa noted that empowering weaving communities is vital not just for economic development but also for preserving India’s cultural heritage. He stressed that artisans must be given opportunities to adapt to new technologies without losing touch with age-old craftsmanship.

Mr. Gupta reiterated NTC’s commitment to workforce welfare and skill development. He explained that the modernization of mills, combined with strategic partnerships with social organizations like NBSS, can create sustainable livelihoods while addressing the evolving needs of the textile industry.

While acknowledging the progress made through government schemes, both sides pointed out persisting challenges such as irregular income, rising production costs, and limited access to international markets. The discussions concluded with a shared determination to design joint programmes that strengthen artisan livelihoods, safeguard traditions, and ensure long-term sustainability in India’s textile sector.
