According to officials, the bamboo support system between two bridge pillars gave way during lifting work at the site. Fire department teams rescued all five labourers and shifted them to hospital. Four workers are reported to be stable, while one remains in serious condition.
Valsad District Collector Bhavya Verma said preliminary findings indicate that a jack used during the operation slipped due to a load-imbalance. “The collapse appears to have resulted from an error in handling the equipment,” she said, adding that a technical committee will examine the sequence of events and submit its findings.
Police and fire units reached the spot within minutes of receiving distress calls. A crane is being used to remove sections of the fallen structure, and officials confirmed that no worker remains trapped beneath the debris. Traffic on Kailash Road has been diverted to avoid congestion.
Roads and Buildings Department Secretary P. R. Patelia said engineers from Surat have been instructed to file a detailed report within two days. He noted that the temporary framework suffered structural damage but stressed that the injuries were “minor” in most cases.
District Police Chief Yuvrajsinh Jadeja said the collapse occurred while workers were levelling a bund. “All workers are out of danger as per doctors,” he said, adding that a formal complaint is being prepared.
Witnesses reported a loud blast-like noise at the time of the incident, which triggered panic and drew a large crowd. Local leaders, including Pardi–Sandhpore Sarpanch Bholabhai Patel, said the accident took place as labourers prepared to lay an iron-bar slab.
Officials have assured strict action if negligence is confirmed.
