Ninety-two remote villages in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region are preparing to hoist the Tricolour this Independence Day, marking a historic transition from armed conflict to open national celebrations.
The villages include 33 in Bijapur district, 50 in Sukma and nine in Narayanpur. These areas were among the regions most severely affected by Left-Wing Extremism, where national festivals were frequently marked by Maoist boycott calls, threats and black flags.
First Independence Day After LWE-Free Declaration
The August 15 celebrations will be the first Independence Day programme in these villages after Chhattisgarh was officially declared free from armed Maoist insurgency on March 31, 2026.
State Home Minister Vijay Sharma said the occasion would demonstrate the expanded reach of constitutional governance and public administration in the region.
Until a few years ago, schools and village bodies in several interior areas either organised subdued flag-hoisting ceremonies under tight security or avoided public celebrations because of threats.
Week-Long Tiranga Campaign
A series of Tiranga outreach programmes and motorcycle rallies has been planned across Bastar from August 10 to 15. The proposed routes include areas such as Silger, Rani Bodli, Errabore, Tadmetla, Tekalgudem, Dharbhaguda and Jhiram—places associated with some of the region’s deadliest Maoist attacks.
Youth volunteers, women riders, local residents and political workers are expected to participate.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai is also expected to join Independence Day programmes in Bastar. The government is considering naming schools, community buildings and public places after security personnel who lost their lives during anti-Maoist operations.
For residents of the 92 villages, the celebrations will represent more than a ceremonial flag-hoisting. They will mark the region’s attempt to leave behind decades of fear and isolation.
