Fear has gripped a village in Chhattisgarh's Kanker district after a female bear that allegedly killed three villagers died during treatment in Raipur. The situation remains tense as another bear entered the village and reportedly tried to break into several houses.

The incident has left residents afraid to go to their farms or send their children to school. Villagers have locked the local school and launched a protest, demanding immediate safety measures and removal of bears from the nearby hill area.

Female Bear Dies During Treatment

The female bear had attacked three villagers on August 5 in Largaon Markatola village under the Narharpur forest range. According to officials and local residents, the bear attacked people working in the fields and allegedly killed a brother and sister. Their bodies were reportedly mauled by the animal for several hours after the attack.

One other villager was seriously injured in the incident and was shifted to DKS Hospital in Raipur for treatment.

Following the attack, angry villagers reportedly beat the bear with sticks. A team from the Forest Department later tranquilised the animal and brought it to Raipur for treatment. However, the bear died during treatment. DFO Raunak Goyal confirmed the death, although the exact cause has not yet been established.

Another Bear Enters the Village

The situation became more alarming when another bear entered the village following the incident. Residents said the animal tried to break the doors of several houses during the night.

Although no one was injured in the latest incident, the presence of the bear has intensified fear among villagers. Many residents have stopped going to their fields, while parents are reluctant to send their children to school.

The villagers say the school is located close to the hill where bears are frequently spotted.

School Locked Over Safety Concerns

Concerned about the safety of children, villagers locked the school and staged a protest. They said the school does not have a boundary wall, leaving students exposed to wildlife from the nearby forest and hill area.

The villagers are demanding that a boundary wall be constructed around the school and that the Forest Department take immediate steps to move the bears away from the populated area.

'Children Will Not Return Without Security'

Village deputy sarpanch Ritika Diwakar said the safety of children must be ensured before the school is reopened.

She said the administration should first remove the bears from the hill area and construct a boundary wall around the school. According to her, both children and adults are living under constant fear following the recent attacks.

The villagers have said they will not send their children to school until adequate security arrangements are made.

Boundary Wall Demand Pending

Residents claimed that they had been demanding a boundary wall around the school for a long time. They said villagers regularly travel to nearby fields for agricultural work, making the presence of bears in the surrounding area a serious concern.

According to the villagers, the administration has started responding to their concerns only after the recent fatal attack.

They have demanded a permanent solution, including wildlife monitoring, safety measures around the village and construction of the school boundary wall.

Bear Attack Sparked Fear

The August 5 attack has raised fresh concerns over human-wildlife conflict in the area. The female bear was reportedly aggressive, with local accounts suggesting that it had become more dangerous after the death of its cub.

The attack, in which three villagers lost their lives and another was seriously injured, has left residents particularly concerned about children and elderly people.

With another bear now reportedly moving around the village, residents say immediate intervention is necessary to prevent another tragedy.

The Forest Department is expected to monitor the situation and take further action based on the movement of the animal and the safety requirements of the village.
