Why Marriages Aren’t Held in Sawan Despite Shiva-Parvati's Wedding?

Although Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were married in the month of Sawan, weddings are still avoided during this time. Discover the scriptural reasons and spiritual significance behind this tradition.

The month of Sawan is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered a symbol of devotion, fasting and restraint throughout India. But as soon as it comes to marriage, this question arises again and again. Is it forbidden or inauspicious to get married in Sawan? Is it just a tradition or is there any scriptural reason behind it?

Time of detachment from household: Sawan month is considered to be the period of penance and worship of Shiva. At this time, restraint, celibacy and concentration are given priority. Enjoyment-oriented rituals like marriage are said to be forbidden in this month.

Dev Shayan Kaal: From Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi to Devshayani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu goes into Yog Nidra, which lasts for four months. Any auspicious work in Chaturmas, especially marriage, is considered forbidden in the scriptures.

Lack of Nakshatras and Muhurat: Most of the auspicious Nakshatras and marriage Muhurat are not available in the month of Sawan, so this time is not suitable even according to the Panchang.

But there are exceptions too: The story of Shiva-Parvati marriage is associated with Sawan, but it was a divine event, not a normal household marriage. In some traditions, Gandharva marriage or limited marriages are organized in special circumstances, but these are exceptions.

So in the end it can be said that marriage in Sawan is prohibited according to the scriptures, because this is the time of devotion, meditation and spiritual practice.
