Pink or White Salt: Which Is Better for You?

Wondering which salt is healthier—pink or white? Find out the pros and cons of both and which one is right for your diet.

Is pink salt better than white salt? Often people have this question in their mind and many people also start consuming it. Actually, it is important to understand which salt is good for our health. Is it right to take pink salt and can taking it in excess cause harm? Today we will tell you the answers to all these questions

What is pink salt?

Pink salt, also known as Himalayan salt, mainly comes from the Khewra mines of Pakistan. It contains natural minerals such as – calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron (which is why it is pink in color). But the thing to note is that these minerals are in very small quantities – so less that they do not make much difference to your daily nutrition.

Is pink salt healthy?

The positive side

  • It is minimally processed, so some people consider it “natural”.
  • For people who may be allergic to iodine, this can be an option (although such cases are very rare).

The downside

  • It does not contain iodine, which is essential for thyroid health. White salt has iodine added to it (iodized salt).
  • Pink salt is also basically sodium chloride. This means that if you eat too much, you will have the same blood pressure and heart problems as you would with white salt.

Disadvantages of consuming too much pink salt

High blood pressure- Consuming too much is harmful due to its sodium content.

Effect on kidneys- Excess sodium increases the load on the kidneys.

Iodine deficiency- If you depend only on pink salt, there may be a deficiency of iodine in the body – which can lead to goiter and thyroid problems.

What to eat – pink salt or white salt?

Use iodized white salt in everyday cooking so that iodine requirements are met. Pink salt may sometimes be used for flavor or decoration (such as in salads or drinks).
