Fresh FIR Against Mamata Banerjee Over Alleged “Anti-National Remarks”, Political Row Escalates

A fresh legal trouble has emerged for West Bengal’s former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after an FIR was registered against her at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station. The complaint, filed by a lawyer, alleges that her recent public statements amounted to “anti-national remarks” and created tensions in connection with comments linked to a murder case in Bangladesh.

According to police sources, the FIR was lodged based on a complaint by advocate Rinki Sen Chatterjee. The complaint alleges that Mamata Banerjee made statements during a public event that indirectly questioned the role of India’s Union Home Ministry in a cross-border criminal matter, thereby allegedly provoking diplomatic sensitivity between India and Bangladesh.

The controversy traces back to June 2, 2026, when Mamata Banerjee was addressing a Trinamool Congress protest rally in Kolkata’s Dharmatala area. During her speech, she reportedly referred to the killing of Bangladeshi student leader Osman Bin Hadi and claimed she had detailed knowledge about those behind the incident, though she refrained from disclosing names publicly. Her remarks suggested that revealing such information could create unrest in Bangladesh.

The complainant alleges that the speech included indirect references to India’s internal security agencies and the Union Home Ministry, headed by Amit Shah. It is further claimed that the comments created confusion and tension over cross-border security coordination and were interpreted by some as politically sensitive and provocative.

According to the FIR, the complainant stated that Mamata Banerjee suggested that individuals involved in the case had entered West Bengal through Meghalaya borders and were later arrested by state Special Task Force (STF) units. The complaint argues that linking such statements with international incidents without formal investigation could have serious diplomatic implications.

The case has triggered a fresh political storm, with opposition leaders targeting the Trinamool Congress over the remarks, while party supporters have defended Mamata Banerjee, calling it a political attempt to misinterpret her speech. The FIR has added another layer of legal and political tension around the former Chief Minister, who has often been at the center of confrontations with central agencies and the Union government.

Officials familiar with the matter said that the FIR has been registered under sections related to alleged inflammatory and objectionable public statements. However, no formal summons or questioning schedule has been announced yet.

The incident also revives attention on the broader context of the Osman Bin Hadi murder case in Bangladesh, which reportedly took place in December last year. According to earlier reports, some accused individuals had allegedly crossed into Indian territory through border routes and were later detained by West Bengal STF teams after coordination and intelligence inputs.
