Indore Mother Donates Kidney to Save Son; Second Successful Transplant at SSH Under Ayushman Scheme
Indore, Madhya Pradesh
– In an inspiring act of maternal sacrifice, a woman donated her kidney to save her 24-year-old son, who had been battling kidney failure for five years. The life-saving transplant was successfully performed at the Super Speciality Hospital (SSH) of MGM Medical College in Indore, marking the facility’s second kidney transplant since it began such surgeries in October 2023. The procedure was carried out free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana.
A Battle Against Kidney Failure
The young patient, a resident of Dewas, had been diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy—a chronic kidney disease that damages the kidneys’ filtering system. Both his kidneys had failed, leaving him dependent on dialysis for two years. Despite regular sessions, his condition worsened, and a transplant became the only viable option.
Mother’s Gift of Life
Seeing her son’s deteriorating health, his mother volunteered to donate her kidney. The surgery was performed on July 1, and doctors reported that the donated organ adapted well to the patient’s body. He has since been discharged and is recovering steadily.
No Financial Burden
The entire cost of the transplant was covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, ensuring the family faced no financial strain. The scheme played a crucial role in making advanced healthcare accessible to the patient.
Expert Team Behind the Surgery
The complex procedure was executed by a multidisciplinary team of experts, including nephrologists Dr. Ritesh Kumar Banode and Dr. Padmamini Sarkanungo, urologists Dr. Arpan Choudhary, Dr. Vishal Kirti Jain, Dr. Manas, and Dr. Deep, anesthetist Dr. Deepti Saxena, transplant in-charge Dr. Ekta Chaurasia, and supporting doctors Dr. Pradeep Salgiya and Dr. Sushil Bhatia. Hospital Superintendent Dr. Sumit Shukla played a key role in facilitating the process.
Hospital’s Growing Capability
According to Dr. Arvind Ghanghoria, Dean of MGM Medical College, the institution aims to perform at least two transplants every month to benefit more patients suffering from kidney failure.
